The image of a tragic loss
The image of how my friend committed self-murder is still vivid and agonizing in my memory to this day. After school on a Friday, I went to see how Mark was doing at his house as usual. As the loud music greeted me from a distance, something seemed out of the ordinary. I chose the window after pounding on the door so loudly that it caught the neighbors' attention. When I entered the home, it was a complete shock. I was speechless, trembling, and unable to move as tears ran down my face.
A desperate call for help
"What's going on? God, oh God! Mark is on his last days. Help is needed! Someone please call 911!" Shakira his neighbor was already shouting. Shakira, a nurse student, tried some first aid before the doctors arrived in a few minutes time. "He has ingested an overdose of over-the-counter medicine and consumed excessive alcohol," Shakira said after observing the rumpled floor. He lay there helplessly, unconscious, breathing slow, sweating, and shivering. The doctor checked on his heartbeat soon after arrival. "I am so sorry, but the boy is no more," the doctor pronounced. "My son is not dead, no! That can’t be, Mark mummy is here, wake up dear," Mark's mother cried uncontrollably.
The lasting impact
Self-murder leaves a significant mark that is hard to heal and to erase from the minds of people in the society. It takes a prolonged time for the loved ones to recover from the tragedy. Suicide subjects people to a feeling of failure, extreme guilt, anger, distress, and confusion. It impacts on the young generation, who opt for suicide to solve problems which instead increases the number of suicidal tendencies in the society.
