Educators and Book Recommendations
Educators suggest books or novels for the students to read so that they can gain knowledge. The fact that students were offended when the dean of Matteo Ricci College, Jodi Kelly, recommended Dick Gregory's book Nigger for one of them to read indicates racism (Gregory). Although students have the right to present their grievances, they should not protest when asked to read a book authored by a black person.
Importance of Gregory's Book
In my opinion, Gregory might have discussed some critical factors that affect the contemporary society. If I were a member of Matteo Ricci administration, I would support Dean Kelly's side. The most vital aspect that students should understand is that Gregory's book might enable them to acquire knowledge that would change their perspectives on various things related to cultural differences. For example, they might get a proper understanding of why conflicts occur between the black and white people.
Diversifying the Academic Curriculum
The academic curriculum should be diversified so that students can understand and appreciate their colleagues from different cultures or ethnic backgrounds. Moreover, students who do not learn how to interact with different people while at school might face significant challenges when they enter the diversified job market (Gregory). As many firms enter the global market, they adopt diverse workforce to understand the needs of people in different corners of the world. Therefore, the right way to diversify the academic curriculum is through the recommendation of books written by authors from different cultures. Additionally, universities should have educators from different ethnicities so that students can gradually comprehend others' way of living and their beliefs. Most importantly, the college administration should implement policies that entitle the students to respect professors and other educators who help them gain adequate knowledge.
Conclusion
To sum up, students should not protests for the change in academic curriculum just because one educator requires them to read a book written by a black author. Indeed, it is always crucial not to judge the book by its cover.
