The Ultimate Role Model: Jesus
The ultimate model is Jesus for Christians; he is the individual whose personality, actions, example and norm all can imite (Blanchard and Phil 18). According to the Bible, "Because God had previously known his people, he chose them as his Son, so that he would make his Son the firstborn among many brothers" (King James Version, Rom. 8:29). This confirms that it is the will of God to imitate Jesus as their role role model for Christians.
The Importance of Jesus as the Ultimate Role Model
But why is the ultimate role model considered? God created man to reach out and help others rather than strive to satisfy selfish desires. According to Philippians 2:4:5, "Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus." Jesus, as the role model shows us exactly what God wanted us to live. Unlike man, Jesus was not self-centred but instead, went out of his ways to help the people in need. He fed the hungry (Matthew 14:13-21), helped the needy (Eph. 2:10), and healed the sick (Matthew 9:20-22). Jesus was a servant leader; he washed his disciples' feet during the last supper (John 13-17). This teaches man how he should strive to help others and look at the welfare of others besides his personal welfare. Following this teaching will surely make the world a better place as everyone will be his brothers' keeper as God wanted.
Worshipping and Following God's Will
Man was created to worship God. Jesus as the ultimate role model praised and worshipped God. "At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, 'I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure'" (Luke 10:21). Additionally, he always sought to do God's will and even died to fulfil Gods will. These instances make him the ultimate role model who should be emulated by all people.
Setting Priorities and Having a Relationship with God
Jesus' life and teaching is equally important to human. Throughout his life and through his teachings, Jesus showed the need for setting priorities right, and having a good relationship with God. Through his life, Jesus showed how having the right relationship with God empowers man to do that which may be impossible to common men, including miracles. Conversely, through his teachings, Jesus showed how man is assured of a better life if he has a good relationship with God. As such, I will strive to be more like Jesus and especially in cultivating a positive relationship with God. I envision to remain righteous by always doing God's will. I will also cultivate a good relationship with God by praising and worshiping him in truth and in spirit as taught by Jesus Christ. I will also follow Jesus' teachings on matters such as service to humanity among other social issues.
Emulating Jesus Despite Human Imperfections
In retrospection, I will be selfless, praise and worship the Lord in truth and spirit, prioritize and put God first and make sacrifices for God's will. However, emulating Jesus will not be an easy task since unlike Jesus who is God, I am but human, and prone to errors. However, I will do my best and use the old adage "What Would Jesus Do," to achieve my goal.
