Knowing the Importance of Communication in Leadership


Knowing the importance of communication in leadership enables people to appreciate the value of a positive personality in leadership effectiveness. The skills, however, are not independent of our own experiences. Personality and work style are influenced by external elements such as autonomy, communication, and the natural reaction to other people. The following dialogue reflects my leadership and communication approach.


My Leadership Style


Based on the facts in the spider review, I approach leadership with a stronger emphasis on the EFF point of view, which suggests effortlessness. My leadership style is that of a transformational leader. I do, however, find myself embracing some aspects of affiliative leadership. In my action as a leader, I strive for professional and personal development through the incorporation of team effort and emphasis on self-esteem. In the hospital environment, I employ a positive and a charismatic approach, which includes effortless execution in communication skills, integrity, and confidence.


Transformative Leadership Approach


I strive to have work completed on time without inhibition of the authority of the nurse manager or interfering with the ability to step in, in case there is a need to make a decisive action. The leadership style incorporates transformational elements in which I consistently urge the members of my team to stick by the policies and procedures that have been set in the hospital. I believe that the role of the transformational leader does not involve following procedures with automatic compliance but also providing answers to the questions of “why” and “how.” The element of transformational leadership is important because it not only helps in the understanding of the leadership approach but also understanding the vision of the facility.


Strengths and Challenges


From the assessment, my strengths lie in my strong execution skills, communication, integrity, and confidence. However, the challenges of the leadership style are the need to understand the policies of the institutions. It is often taken as disobedience and insolence when I find it important to understand the vision of the facility to find my place in the institution. The learning process involves communication, in which I apply empathy in understanding the needs and motivations for my team leaders and members.


Working Styles in Team Projects


The working styles of a teammate in the completion of a class project should be democratic. The teammate should have the ability to include himself and other members of the team in the decision-making and goal-setting process through soliciting feedback and suggestions. A class project involves research that requires a team effort. With this in mind, the individuals should be able to consider the efforts made by the other members along with personal research in the final research. The strengths of the working style are the encouragement that the style offers for the professional and personal development of the members by encouraging collaboration and autonomy. The work styles motivate the members to take the initiative and contribute considerably to the class project.

Communication is an important part of my leadership skills. I find it necessary to communicate at all times. The listening modes that I prefer using are sincerity. I continuously employ dialogical listening, which is aimed at achieving an empathic approach to the listening process. The approach of sincerity ensures that the conversation is a shared activity in which there is the employment of active listening that focuses attention on the views of the other party and concentrates on the emerging product of the conversation including my view. The discussion that uses the mode of sincerity allows it to be open-ended. It is a soft style of listening that recognizes the other party as a choice maker while accommodating critical elements of modesty, trust, humility, and robust recognition. The listening mode allows focusing on the present by bringing to light the actions that the party is exposed to. The listening mode requires the parties involved to be present in the process of the unification of thoughts, actions, intentions, and speech while improving on power differences.


Authentic Conversations


When having a conversation with other people, I tend to incline my conversation more to authenticity in the conversation. In this, the verbal communication is focused on topics that are mutually shared by both people. Thus, the talking mode I prefer to use authenticity. In this, the response and listening process are based on the improvement of mutual understanding. I have noted that most people do not listen attentively because they are distracted or thinking of something else at the time. My choice to use the authenticity talking mode is aimed at establishing a more structured form for the response and listening practice in which I compel those that I am addressing to focus their full attention on me. The mode of talking allows for open disagreement by motivating the other party to express any information that they have in mind. Additionally, the mode allows for clarification in case the party has not heard anything that I have said.


Improving Communication


The use of sincerity and authenticity as listening and talking modes has created cycles of waste and value. I appreciate the effort of sincerity that the parties I continually interact within exhibit. However, I have at times been burdened with the need to listen to personal accounts and offer information that I deem personal. Similar to the ideas of authentication that calls on me to certify experiences, which I feel that everyone has experienced and yet are exclusively unique to me. While this has taken a toll on my relationships, I feel that the perspective of others about me has been negative. They perceive me as a selfish person who is overbearing and problematic. The change of communication modes is aimed at increasing value and reducing waste. In this case, the call is to work on a style that applies both sincerity and authenticity in the active and dialogic listening and conversation process.

The learning habits and skills I need to become an excellent student are listening well and clear communication. Understanding the information that I need to provide through a distinction of my individual thoughts and feelings help me to have effective communication and understanding. In addition, I need to develop an initiative with democratic attributes, especially with the class projects. The ability to develop the democratic attributes will not only motivate and increase collaborative activities but will also help me work better as an individual and group by establishing autonomy.


Existing Skills


The learning habits and skills I already have are empathic communication, independence, and positive attitudes. The means of applying effective communication, especially when it comes to empathic responses, allows for a reflection of feelings through a verbal conveyance of my personal understanding of the party's emotional well-being. The practice triggers the development of positive attitudes of attention and care needed as a critical component of effective listening. The maintenance of positive attitudes allows me to exhume positivity in my interaction with the people while giving hope to the people around me.


Skills to Develop


The learning habits and skills I need to develop are authoritative leadership. The aspect of an authoritative leader can apply the information provided to create a structured decision. The authoritarian quality allows focusing on the management of present and current conflicts. The characteristics enhance the development of critical listening that gives room for evaluation. The plan I have for developing and sustaining the learning habits I need to develop is to work on personal development. It is only through a process of introspection and reflection that I will be able to understand what is required of me in the development of good learning habits and skills.


Part 4: Assessment


The lessons from the exercises are the importance of introspection and reflection in the development of personal traits. The personal traits have a critical influence on the decisions I make within my nursing profession. The main challenge of the exercises was principally on understanding the connection between personal experience, attitudes, and skills that I require to develop. The exercises were of great value because they have enabled me to have a structured means of understanding my personal nature and its influence on my job. Understanding the relationships and the effect of the experiences that I have had in the past provide critical ideas of my potential strength and weaknesses.

In conclusion, the role of personality in the development of personal leadership and work styles is evident from the reflection above. The relationship between perception and performance cannot be overlooked. The reflection allows for the definition of the critical leadership and factors that have made me a good person, student, and worker. While I have explored my positive aspects, the analysis and reflection skills enable me to understand the areas that require improvement to make a greater impact on my leadership and communication abilities.
