After watching the video, my understanding of racial bigotry expanded to the fact that it affects not just the color of the skin. To these young girls, the prejudices that have been imposed by the skin color affects their definition of beauty, the normal daily choice of fashion and even the self-esteem and inferiority. The manner in which societal values have been passed down the generations and the treatment of individuals based on color according to me are the sources of these misconceptions that have deeply entrenched the psychology of young people. The way the society and individuals who are different from us judges us affect our way of life and perception of many things, which in turn tend to define our existence. I find that to be true especially where one lacks a proud solid and rooted cultural identity like these young black girls and children.
As such one of the basic concept of intercultural communication that can be applied to the doll choices is that of identity. By educating the children and the young girls about their identity and roots, they will begin to appreciate who they are instead of perceptions of people imposed on them. With an identity comes a sense of belonging and importance which positively impacts self-esteem. The second concept is that of multiculturalism which will ensure that these children understand that there is more than one culture and each is beautiful in its own right. By highlighting the values and what that cultures appreciate, the children will find new identity and understanding of their existence and cultural underpinnings, thus unlearning these prejudices.
