I am the founder and manager of John Allan enterprise, a technology company that deals with the manufacturing and installation of CCTV camera. The total number of employees in the company is forty-five. Recently, the company made an advertisement for a company marketing manager whereby James emerged triumphantly. However, recently, Nancy the marketing assistant realized that James is a gay and decided to report the matter to me and she went ahead to talk about it with her collogues in the sales department. James is worried that he might lose his position and since the secret came out, most of the employees have kept distance and avoided him. Since James joined the company, the business has won a total of five federal contracts, and the revenue is increasing. However, there have been dismissal suggestions from some of the employees who think James is not fit to continue working in the organization due to his sexuality. This has created a communication breakdown since some of the employees are unable to talk directly to him and instead prefer to use other possible means.
As a manager, I understand that diversity, social interaction and unity are significant elements that affect the workplace environment. The organizations are in modern society affected by various social issues such as the diversity of cultural beliefs like in the case of our organization. Some of the impacts of diversity include: loss of business productivity, the incapability to maintain the skilled and valuable employees and possible loss of employment. In society, people tend to judge others by diversity in norms leading to possible disagreements, conflict, and miscommunication. This is already manifested in our business as some of the employees think James is not the right person to this job because of his sexuality. I am afraid this is going to negatively impact our business since a successful outcome needs a regular understanding, trust, and dedication. A divided and tensed workforce is a possible fall on the business side.
To effectively manage staffs that are increasingly diverse in values and culture, the managers have to understand the depth of cultural differences and correspondences among various employees' backgrounds (Kundu 14). Therefore as a manager, I have the full responsibility to understand cultural diversity as well as the possible impacts on the business. As the manager of the staff, I should increase my understanding of cultural diversity to support and encourage employees with diverse social beliefs. Therefore, to turn this matter into the success of the business, I have to let the other employees understand one of our organization's policies that they should not support discrimination or harassment against any individual in the basis of race, culture, religion, sexual orientation and age. Therefore in my next meeting, I will have to remind all employees about the significance of acknowledging and embracing diversity in the workplace. In the next holiday campaign, our organization is going to help society in understanding the importance of embracing diversity in the community.
Psychological Disorders and Treatments
Bipolar disorder
This is a condition of the mind that leads to dangerous attitude changes such as emotional mania and depression (lows). The mental disorder is characterized by an attitude variation between the very high (manic) and very low (depression). Some of the causes include the genetic brain abnormalities and low level of serotonin or neurochemistry and is most likely genetic (Chapter 15). The treatment of bipolar is the use of organic treatment and the use of curative therapies. The general symptoms of bipolar are the experience of excessive anger, the shifts in the sleep patterns and activity levels as well as the odd behavior. Those experiencing the maniac might experience more energy than usual, difficulty in falling asleep, converse quick on different issues (Chapter 16). However, those with the very low variation are always sad and emotionally low, have got less energy and have the sleep challenge of either lacking sleep or not sleeping at all, they forget quickly and most of the times have difficulty in sleeping.
The prevalence of the disease is 4% globally. According to the World Health Organization, most victims are children and youths (Merikangas et al. 544). The drug treatment for the disorder is Lithium which increases serotonin suitable for the mania disorder. However, this treatment method is prone to a lot of threats and side effects. Also, the use of Psychotherapy, specifically the prefrontal lobotomy which is a way to unlock disorderly thought patterns responsible for delusions and confused thoughts can be a mechanism for treating the bipolar disorder. Some other means of managing the disorder include deep brain stimulation and electromagnetic theories (Chapter, 16). Lithium is the most effective in handling bipolar although not so practical for extreme cases of mania. It is mostly preferred in avoiding relapse and suicide by the victims (National Comorbidity Survey Replication 527). One leading theory on bipolar disorder is the lay theory. Interestingly, the disorder is associated with high levels of creativity and intelligence. Some of the celebrities that are suffering from the disease include singer and actress, Demi Lovato and Maria Carey.
