In my opinion, social media posts should not be a basis for firing employees
In my opinion, I do not think what an employee posts on social media platforms such as Facebook should be a basis for them being fired. Social media platforms are channels through which people vent and let out their feelings. They basically are avenues through which people express themselves. These platforms are meant to be private, although most times all members of the public have access to whatever one posts. Sometimes people tend to go overboard while using these platforms, but then again, are we not entitled to the freedom of expression as long as we do not infringe other peoples' space?
Employees should have the freedom to express themselves outside the workplace
In workplaces, employees are expected to abide by the company's code of conduct. But when these employees leave work premises, they are free to speak and act in whichever way they deem best. I simply cannot picture a situation whereby an employee is called to a disciplinary board to explain certain comments or posts that one did at a particular time. Yes, an employee is expected to portray a positive company image. Yes, an employee should always strive to promote the company's reputation. But then, are they not free to express their opinions outside the workplace?
We must exercise our freedoms cautiously to safeguard both individual and employer interests
This is the 21st Century; we are free beings. We cannot all conform to company as well as society expectations. Let us exercise our freedoms cautiously. However, this doesn't mean that an employee should just go on to discredit his employer. It's all about proceeding with moderation. Employees should strive to safeguard both their interests and the interests of the employer. As the adage stipulates, one does not bite the hand that feeds him.
