The Video Incorporates Footage from Various Animated Films
The video incorporates footage from various animated films to depict the many stages of personality development as described by Erik Erikson’s psychological theory of development in eight stages.
Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust
The first clip, from Monsters Inc., depicts how children develop trust or mistrust as they mature. Sully loses faith in Boo despite having previously trusted him. Fear is clearly produced in children as they interact with others and their surroundings.
Stage 2: Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
In the second Finding Nemo clip, Nemo attempts to demonstrate that, despite his damaged fin, he can swim like everyone else. This demonstrates his eagerness to discover his identity and dispel misgivings about his ability, particularly as perceived by his peers.
Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt
The third stage of development indicates initiatives and guilt. Through Riley, memory is categorized under a different section. She stored her proud moments and the important things.
Stage 4: Industry vs. Inferiority
The fourth stage notes industry vs. inferiority or a stage where children work hard to prove that they are good at something, especially to their parents or teachers. In this stage, children are still trying to develop their characters and are normally influenced by their peers and friends, as noted by the character Dash.
Stage 5: Identity vs. Confusion
Stage five, as noted in the clip of Minions, confusion in identity takes place in the first stages of the growth of a child, especially at the adolescent stage.
Stage 6: Intimacy vs. Isolation
Stage six, as noted in the clip of Frozen, depicts the level where intimacy is developed. This level shows that the people are willing to keep the bond of families and friends as part of socialization that is developed within people.
Stage 7: Generativity vs. Stagnation
The seventh stage takes place in middle adulthood, as noted in Toy Story through Andy as he gives his beloved toy to Bonnie as an act of generativity.
Stage 8: Integrity vs. Despair
The integrity vs. despair marks the last stage of Erik Erikson’s eight stages of the theory. The stage is reflected in the clip of UP where Carl promises Ellie a surprise trip to paradise but dies before the trip, leaving Carl in despair and regret failing to actualize Ellie’s dream trip.
Why I Chose This Topic
Accordingly, I chose the topic because through visual appeal, it is possible to relate Erik Erikson’s theory with real human lives as depicted through the animation clips.
