Race & Racism Today

Anthropology is the study of a community's history and values without making any judgments. Similarly, the majority of traditional claims on race and bigotry are rooted in our existence and culture. Even now, the negative consequences of exclusion and misappropriation of race make headlines. Recently, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) released a travel warning for black people, alleging that the carrier would expose black passengers to disrespectful and unjust conditions. The advisory group cited racial insensitivity and racial bias in the airline's corporate culture ("Black Flyers Warned off American Airlines").

Even as racism is still problematic, the indication by the researchers to eliminate the racial based injustices requires more strategies to be implemented. Modern hostilities today are expressed through racial theories. Regardless of the prevailing racial perception of the capacity to highly influence on common racial conceptualizations in the travelling industry is low. This paper will give an anthropological insight in the case of racial bias in AA airlines giving an analysis that exemplifies the key themes and arguments pertaining race and racism.

Overview

The race consciousness intensity in Airlines cannot be entirely attributed to the presence of many races that are non-whites. There is the belief that the racial difference between the blacks and the whites has become a key determinant of political and social relations. The analogy that race determines the mental traits in passengers or customers for example and does not apply today. It was believed that nobility type represented organic superiority over the commoner’s type in the eighteenth century but this form of judgement must not be portrayed in the livelihood of people (Boaz, 15). The rapid headway was made by the racial mental traits determination theory in nineteenth century. Human races and groups have closely allied experience of physical differences which can be determined organically and fundamentally (Boaz, 28).

Again a form of racial affiliation is being developed which is intended to bring a sense of irrelevancy in the life of culture and mentality of black people. In the Case of AA Airlines a black lady was forced to move from a first class seat whereas her friend who was white maintained in their seat. In literature, the efforts being made to get rid of anti-Semitic change experiences are futile if the change doesn’t come from within. In any discussion, one cannot deny the fact that there exists antagonism among the people of different races and cultures. It can be assumed that the racial antagonism and the racial consciousness are insensitive, meaning that they are organically determined. There are many cases of the whites and other races that are mixed up together indicating that there is no fundamental antipathy of race that would hinder the most intimate and closest relations between people of diverse races. Antagonism does not in any way mean the human traits are universal but they can learn to correlate with respect.

Constitutionally, all public services are utilities of all citizens regardless of their race or nationalities. Airline travels are a means of transport and all services must have no variation in both functional and anatomical aspects. Social groups indicate crucial difference in their behaviour and appearance, but there is no implication that these aspects can be determined hereditarily.

Analysis

It is the nature of human to categorize things and make the reality easier to deal with, a mechanism for status coping. Race is very dynamic, it changes at any given time due to varying set of in a society and the way each person translate construct. The construction is based upon the society’s history about the race. For instance, the race started out by conceptualizing whether the people with darker skin were either human or animals in America (Boaz, 26). Many decades have passed away, where there are even issues of equal rights because people are stuck in a mind of society’s culture that is oppressive. Socio-cultural factors are not the only involved but as well more science that is exact. Scientists justify oppression as a result of skin colour by developing factors that demonstrate inferiority. In this reading there are two themes which are opposing themes of ideology of class within the races of European and non-European society (Hurst, 664). First, there is great emphasis of each person’s improvement and the important to strive for achievement, both for gaining personal value, and the need for advancing the race as a whole, from history even to present. Non-Europeans have viewed education as the most effective and respected tool or mechanism for accomplishing the upward mobility goal. This is the major achievement that challenges the oppression based on class and race. Again, the non-Europeans have preserved and protected their race consciousness as a group that is economically and socially oppressed. But this can also mean a strategy for group and individual coping.

Conclusion

The race and racism conception is only in the beholder’s eyes. It depends on who is looking, assuming, judging and has nothing or nothing to do with science but the people’s stereotypes of skin that is dark or assumptions based on the history of the society creating an hierarchy in society that is easy to identify and visible (Boaz, 24).The socio-cultural system emphasis is where the conception and the interpretation of race originated. Race is not an inferiority fact but an idea and Airline travellers should be treated as equals despite their racial orientation. The management could have sort apprehension foe any employee facing cases of racial bias but they simply made a comment in social media alienating any form of injustices that was evidently prevalent in their organizational culture.
