Emily Dickinson's poem I Felt a Funeral in My Brain
Emily Dickinson's poem I Felt a Funeral in My Brain reflects the death of her mental health. It explains the author's lack of sanity as she feels it, weakening from stanza to stanza and ultimately resulting in madness. The word funeral, which denotes death, as well as the mention that it was happening in her head, are indications of these events. The tone of the poem is solemn, as is the atmosphere of every funeral. Mourners waited quietly through a funeral until the coffin was taken to the grave ground. The imagery, such as the church, mourners, and coffin, creates the atmosphere.
The first stanza in To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time
The first stanza in To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time cautions readers to gather rosebuds while they are still fresh as they might be withered and dying tomorrow. The Second stanza discusses the rising and setting of the sun which occurs with the elapsing of time in a day. The third stanza states that youth is the best time but it will be spent and destroyed by the passing time. The forth stanza advises people to take advantage of their youth. The rhyme scheme is ABAB as the last word of the alternating words in the poem rhyme. For instance, in the first stanza, the first line ends with ‘may’ that rhymes with the third sentence ending in ‘today’ (Poets.org). The second line ends with ‘flying’ that rhymes with the last line of the stanza, ending with ‘dying’ (Poets.org).
The purpose of the poem
The purpose of the poem is to convince people to take action while they are still young because once that period of their lives is gone, there is no getting it back.
