Credible Writing

Teaching children the benefits of going to night before 10 p.m.

swaying your partner into dining at your preferred establishment

convincing your employer to give you a raise or a job

Get your neighbor to mow your yard by bribing them

urging your family to communicate verbally rather than using technology

convincing people to vote for a new administration. I would use strong verbs in all forms of campaign communication materials, including theme songs, ads, and even derogatory campaign content, to persuade people to vote for a new government. I might tweet something like, "Vote in a government that FIGHTS for your family," as an example.

Persuading the college admission officers to accept your application for a course. I would write a persuasive essay about myself and why I need to take up the course in that college. An example of a convincing statement is, "My desire to pursue a course in journalism is driven by the passion to INFORM and ENLIGHTEN people about their rights."

Q2. Explain why effective writers cite experts or authority figures to support their points when trying to persuade?

Effective writers cite experts as a way of backing up the assertions they are making in their writing. Readers can easily dismiss a piece of writing that does not refer to authoritative/expert figures in the field of discussion as merely the writer's opinions. Also, citing the experts gives credibility to the information or arguments in the writings and therefore helps to convince the reader. Effective persuasive writing requires the support of facts, figures and illustrations most of which are available in previously done studies in specific fields.

Q3. Read the two (2) versions of the article titled: "the Objectification of Women: Whose Fault Is It by Santi D. Rosa in Chapter 8 and identify the thesis statement of each version.

First version thesis statement: “What I don't understand is that in the year 2003, women are still allowing themselves to be used in such a way," (DeRosa, 2012, 52).

Second version thesis statement: "What I don't understand is why in the year 2003 women are still allowing themselves to be used in such a way," (DeRosa, 2012, 59).

Q4. Explain in detail three (3) changes the writer made between the first and the second versions.

DeRosa made one the first and the second paragraphs of the first version. The writer did this to include all connected information in a single paragraph and to have the thesis statement at the end of the introduction paragraph.

The author changed the formatting of long quotations in the second version to have them half an inch indented.

DeRosa includes Works cited section at the end of the story in the second version which indicates the names of the authors, publication dates, where the articles are published such as websites and links if available.

Q5. Speculate on reasons the writer made those changes.

The author joined short paragraphs into one to help the reader to quickly connect with the idea and understand what the writer has discussed in the rest of the story.

DeRosa indents long quotations and gives page numbers for short quotations to make it easy for the reader to distinguish the quotes from his opinions and also enables the user to link the quotations to the source.

The works cited page is included in the second version to prove that the author researched those sources, acknowledge using them and also to enable a reader who is willing to read the full articles of the quoted authorities or experts to have an idea of how to obtain the materials.
