Why I want to write my dissertation in another specialisation

If applicable: Give reasons why you would like to write your Final/Dissertation in another specialisation:

Purpose of the form

This form is designed for you to create a concrete research plan for your assignment.

Give a brief description of what you want to know

What is the central problem or question that you hope to address with your research? The word ‘problem’ here refers to any theoretical or practical issue that you believe would benefit from further research.

At this stage, you have to formulate a central research question that indicates what you intend to find out about the problem you have identified. Further, you need to outline sub-questions related to your central research question.

Central Research Question and Sub-questions

Central Research Question

What are the effects of the law of immigration for the immigrants of the Netherlands?

Research Sub-questions

a) What are the positive effects of the law of immigration to the immigrants of the Netherlands?

b) What are the negative effects of the law of immigration to the immigrants of the Netherlands?

Explain why you want to answer this question

Use the adjacent box to reflect on key social, political or economic issues as well as any historical events or general circumstances that define the context of your research question.

Introduce this context by reference to quality sources that you found and listed in the ‘Tentative bibliography’ (see below). Use APA style.

Context/Justification of the Research Question

According to the Government of the Netherlands (2018) and European Parliament (2018), the evaluation of the effects of immigration on immigrants will have several benefits to the government and immigrants of the Netherlands. This evaluation will enable the government of the Netherlands to review the extent of implementation of the laws of immigration. Therefore, the government of the Netherlands will improve on the weak areas of the law which have not been implemented. This evaluation will give an opportunity to the immigrants in the Netherlands to express their viewpoints regarding the way the laws of immigration have impacted their lives, which will enable the government of the Netherlands to gain knowledge of the impact of the immigration laws on the immigrants.

Relevance of the proposal to one or more topics that are part of the European Studies programme

Briefly explain how your topic and research relate to the field of European Studies. Can you link your research to specific modules within the European Studies programme?

The research proposal is based on the thorough analysis of the European laws regarding immigration. Conducting this research study will provide an in-depth understanding of the extent of implementation of the European laws of immigration (European Parliament, 2018; Business Legal Consultancy, 2018). Further, comparative studies between the immigration policies of the government of the Netherlands and the European Government will make suggestions on how the implementation laws can be implemented or improved more efficiently (The Government of Netherlands, 2018; European Parliament, 2018; Dustch Immigration Law, 2018; Labaree, 2009; Clingadael, 2018; DutchNews, 2015). Such suggestions will play a crucial role in addressing the problems faced by the immigrants of the Netherlands.

Methodology

What are the research methods you will use and how will they enable you to answer your research question? What (types of) information sources do you plan on using and why? In the adjacent box, describe your methods and justify their suitability for your research. Refer to literature on research methodology. Use APA style.

Purposive sampling will be used to identify the research participants. The respondents in this study will be the immigrants in the Netherlands. Thereafter, simple random sampling will be used to select the respondents for this research study, which will provide the equal chances of participation with being biased. A closed-ended questionnaire will be employed to collect data from the respondents with specific reference of the effect of the immigration laws on the immigrants in the Netherlands. Data will be collected through an online survey and analysed using the SPSS software (Langkos, 2014; Rajasekar, 2006; Labaree, 2009; Kothari, 2013).

Tentative bibliography

Use the adjacent box to provide a tentative list of academic (3) sources and non-academic reports, articles or books (3) that you plan to use in your research. Also add literature on research methodology (at least one source). Use APA style.

Timeline

What is your timeline for completion? Describe the key steps in your progression to the successful submission of your research project. What do you plan to do, when and why?

The timelines for completion of this research project will be dependent on various activities. In ensuring that I progress successfully towards the completion of this research project, I will first seek approval of my chosen research topic from my supervisors. This activity is estimated to take a period of two weeks.

The next step is narrowing down the chosen topic to focus on the specific area and context of the study. It is estimated that the activities of identification of the key research questions, research sub-questions, exploration of the background and formulation of the problem statement will take another period of one month at most.

Additionally, the literature review of the study will be carried out. Thereafter, the research methodology and instrumentation will be done. Lastly, a compilation of the thesis will be done to complete the writing of this project and submission to the Institute of Postgraduate Studies.

The review of literature in the relevant areas of study will take a period of one month. The selection of the theoretical and conceptual framework will be done within a period of one week. The research methodology will be compiled within a period of two weeks. I anticipate that the data collection and analysis will take a period of two months. Lastly, the thesis compilation will also take a period of two months.

In conclusion, this particular research project is estimated to take a period of five months for its completion.
