The name of the movie under review is ‘the importance of being Earnest.’ It was released in the year 1952 by re-known movie director Anthony Asquith (Parker, 2002).It is derived from the popular play by Oscar Wilde. I enjoyed the watching the movie due to its simple setting which makes it easy to understand.
This movie is a romance drama that revolves around different families of elite stature in the society. The main character is earnest; a fictitious brother in whom two rakes chose to impersonate to get to their desired lovers. The whole play is based on a 1940s kind of English setting with the theme being a display of traditions and values such as religion and status on love related matters.
The play/movie director fuses the drama with a little comedy meant for comical entertainment, thus helping in breaking the monotony of a rather slow picking play that lacks breathtaking suspense. The characters, however, manage to display high-quality acting skills with the likes of Gwendolen managing to dramatically display the character of really spoilt kin by behaving in an unmemorable persona.
The movie ending is on a high note as the said ‘earnest’ is allowed to proceed with the marriages of their engaged partners regardless of the social standing. It is however notable that this happened after the favored illusion in society comes to play, for example, Algy is allowed to wed when only it is found out that his preferred engagement partner has a hefty trust fund.
All in all, the play stands at a lukewarm capacity as I would recommend more action and dramatization of events for purposes of creating more suspense.
