The essay 'My Land of Dreams' depicts nature's gender biases crushing the dreams of a young promising woman, Tiffany Forte, in baseball games reserved for men. George Orwell's novel 'Shooting an Elephant' portrays the effects of colonization on aboriginal peoples and, as a result, the presence of conflict that flares up at the slightest provocation (We, Swantje para 2).
The one essay I choose, however, is Junot Diaz's "The Money." The essay depicts a wide variety of social and political consequences associated with immigration status. The author cannot afford basic necessities such as a proper home, food, and clothes (Junot Diaz para 2). Soda, juice, and snacks were a reserve of a few. Clothing resembled shrugs that were the second rate with no real labels. The narrator’s mother had an aging parent to take care of back at home with her meager salary. Crime is another theme enhanced in the story (Junot Diaz para 3). Burglary is a pointer to the level of predisposition to terror and terror related activities and government’s reluctance to provide security. The thieves took away a portable radio, narrator’s dungeon and the little savings the mother had for her old parents back at home (Junot Diaz para 6). The nature of the materials stolen depicts desperation among thieves stealing from impoverished family.
Essay analysis
The stories introduction sets a contrasting conflict between the narrator and her parent's priorities which make the narrator denied comfortability in terms of food, shelter, and clothing. The conflicts isolated the thesis statement which is easily accessible to the reader (Lee & Brandon 12). An account of what transpired has been clearly arranged in logical sequence in the subsequent paragraphs which evoke sympathy. There is also the use of a variety of sentence structure alongside direct speech which invites the reader to be part and parcel of the story (Lee & Brandon 14). The narrator has also maintained a constant tense at any point in the essay. The essay continues to build a case from the previous scenario reaffirming the thesis at the end shying away from other tangents that have likelihood of confusing the reader.
