Albert Bandura, a psychologist, pioneered the concept of self-efficacy. This term relates to one's true belief in one's ability or capability to carry out various types/forms of activity (Self Efficacy, 2017). Self-efficacy refers to one's ability to regulate one's behavior, emotions, motivation, and social environment (Self Efficacy, 2017). This assignment also requires viewing a YouTube video titled Education for Students in America by Barrack Obama.
It is also worth noting that self-efficacy is an important component of Bandura's social cognitive theory. In general, self-efficacy has an impact on pupils' academic achievement. In reference to the video by the former President Barrack Obama that was recorded in September 2009 at Wakefield High School in Virginia, students in the U.S pursuing higher education have accumulated a huge loan debt. On average, each student accumulates a debt of at least $26,000, these numbers are also likely to rise in case the Government/congress do not take stern moves or actions (https://youtu.be/4JrEPVE-GOk.) Despite the fact that his speech was limited to people from who are pursuing Higher Education, his speech was widely received by students ranging from Kindergarten, High school and senior high.

Apart from his campaign on student loan and debt, the former President Barrack Obama also encouraged the students to take an initiative and stay focused on their school activities. According to Barrack Obama, no one is more qualified in learning and gaining new information like a student who is self – motivated and has goals and objectives. He also stated that students should try as much as they can to be enthusiastic in the learning process, they should believe in the learning capabilities. This is the only way they can improve their self – efficacy.

Basically, it is safe to state the fact that education is something that is very valuable to the community. Students and young adults pursuing higher education must be attentive and should give their parents and teachers a hard time since they are the future of the economy (Self Efficacy, 2017). In reference to the video, it is also important to note the fact that the rate of students loan are increasing as each year passes by. As a result, the future generation is at risk. Consequently as a result of the loans, students will have to work an extra mile so that they can be able to repay their loans. Lastly, Barrack Obama also stated that the future of America depends on the current generation of students pursuing different courses. He praised them for their continued efforts and urged them to remain focused with their studies. Basically, Barrack Obama emphasized on self – motivation and determination to all the students.

Generally, in reference to the articles that were used to complete this paper, it is safe to state the fact that they support Barrack Obama’s Speech. However, it is also important to note that they also have extra details/information which may contradict the pop culture. According to this articles, self – efficacy is very important when it comes to Students. A good example that can be used to explain this fact is that Academic self – efficacy is greatly related to academic – related Boredom (Self Efficacy, 2017). It was also stated that the main reason behind academic boredom is the fact that students are subjected to academic activities that surpass their capabilities or reasoning (SacLink Login 1, 2017). As a result, they tend to be less motivated in learning/pursuing any activity that involves learning. When we look at a study that was conducted by Zuhong Lu and Yangyan Liu, 514 Chinese High School students were subjected to a test.



The main aim of the test was to measure their academic- related boredom and academic self – efficacy. The results of this study were based on one’s genes and alleles. For instance, the relationship between academic – related Boredom and academic self-efficacy was found to be more reliable on Students with 3 – repeat alleles as compared to those who have 4 – repeat alleles (SacLink Login 1, 2017). It was also found out that there is a great relationship between academic – self Efficacy and related boredom in that they are both moderated/regulated by the MAOA gene. It was also reported that Students with Low IQs that are below 95 have more boredom (SacLink Login 1, 2017). Their academic abilities were rated negatively. The research also found out that students who have lower verbal and non – verbal cognitive abilities performed poorly and were much more bored than others.

In reference to the results that were obtained after an analysis plan, out of the 514 students, 234 were 3-repeat genotype while 154 were 4 – repeat genotype (SacLink Login 1, 2017). When the students were subjected to a test, it was found out that students with 4 – repeat alleles had scores that were much higher as compared to the students with 3 – alleles. This means that students with 4 repeating alleles are much more related to academic-related boredom. When we look at the results students with 4 – repeat allele have a variable intercept, time, academic self – efficacy and academic self – efficacy * Time of 3.63, 0.01, -0.42 and -0.01 respectively (Self Efficacy, 2017). Normally, students that do not have a 4 repeat – allele have values of 3.80, 0.02, -0.50 and -0.01 respectively.

In conclusion, as much as the results from the test were very accurate and dependable, it is also important to note the fact that Academic Self – Efficacy and Academic – Related Boredom are self-reported (Self Efficacy, 2017). It can also be concluded that alleles play an important role when it comes to Boredom. Basically, students with very low IQs are likely to have more boredom as compared to students who have a higher IQ that is more than 95. Most of the information relates to the pop culture in that when we look at the video, Barrack Obama talks about self – motivation, inspiration, and setting of attainable goals and objectives. According to the pop culture, learning/concentration cannot take place effectively in case the students are bored. When we look at the articles, a modification of the MAOA gene is very important in that it leads to positive/favorable results. Basically, in reference to the video, students should be self-motivated so that they can be able to achieve the required results for their parents and teachers.
