I am more at ease using words with family members and least at ease with outsiders. A feeling of identity and togetherness is also provided by family members and close friends. They are not out to criticize what I say, but rather to hear it and react appropriately. They can ignore many factors, such as incorrect pronunciation, and also include the correct pronunciations. An outsider, on the other hand, has the potential to be harsh. They will publicly mock anyone who uses language incorrectly without presenting proper use of the language. Strangers will range from audience members listening to a speech to unknown strangers encountered on the street. They can laugh and critique my use of language. This tends to be intimidating, as such; I only speak that which I am confident of in such circumstances.
How I Account For my Feelings
I often account for my feelings through speaking through the mind. This is commonly referred to as the train of thought. After this train of thought, I tend to select the appropriate words so that I can express the feelings. Feelings are often tricky to express completely via the spoken word. As such, I employ aspects such as body language and laughter accompanied by words (Anzaldua, 57).
Relationship to Anzaldua
How I account for my feelings is related to the point Anzaldua makes in How to Tame a Wild Tongue as my approach takes time before the feelings are spewed out. The tongue does not simply utter, I process the feelings first then consider whether it is necessary to speak them. This helps in preserving the wild nature of the tongue (pg. 54).
