Investigations Make Use of Data and Outside Resources

Teachers can use a variety of ways to guide data gathering and utilization. In the video "The Inquiry Continues: Collecting Data and Drawing on Resources," the teacher provides the necessary equipment for the experiment. The teacher guides the students but occasionally stands back to let them figure things out on their own. Students can talk and brainstorm by arranging them into groups and providing them time to carry out the experiment. The students gathered data by measuring with a ruler, observing and touching with their own hands, and then documenting it in their notebooks. The observation and recording was carried out on a weekly basis.
Giving the students non-fictional books on the topics that they are studying to go through in groups. The strategy is called text-a-go-round where a set of books go round from one group to another so that the students can find out information. They discuss the information in the books in their various groups. The books are written in different levels so that there is complicated information for those looking for challenge and basic info for the struggling readers (Annenberg Foundation, 2016). They are able to connect what they saw in the field trip and what is in the books while having good discussion.

The students compared data from the two tubes at the start and at the end of the experiment to draw conclusions. They concluded that the columns with little soils had undergone a lot of decomposition since leaves turned dark due decomposition in the tube. They recorded the colour of the leaves as green at the start of the experiment and how they look at the end of the experiment to conclude that the leaves had decomposed. They had a total of seven experiments which according to their teacher, were all needed to get the right outcomes.

It is important that the students expand their communication at home about their understanding. To do that, what the students study in the classroom should be linked to what they encounter in everyday life. The link can be achieved through cause-and-effect kind of approach where they are given healthy skeptism for data and data presentation. Additionally, it can be achieved by showing them data that has been collected and organized by scientists like in journals. Allowing the children to interact with samples and giving their thoughts of what they think reinforces learning (Thriteen/WNET, 2016). Posing questions to students make them think about it even when they may not have an answer to the question immediately. Museums, science centers and universities are great resources where students can learn through outside resources (Annenberg Foundation, 2016). Universities help educate children about science apart from the research and undergraduates studies that they offer.

Students who do good things should are allowed to share with the rest of the class as a learning strategy. Teacher should do experiments with the kids and make students make sense out of the experiments as they are doing it rather than waiting to do so at the end (Paul , 2013). By allowing the students to have a close observation and then sketching as a data collection method is important because it frees them up to get their visual ideas and think about them. Watching keenly enable them clear any misconception since they are able compare with what they know (Thriteen/WNET, 2016). Asking the experts questions about what they see and reading together the information displayed about what they see also work well as a teaching strategy. Without making notes important make notes, they may forget and there having each student take notes reinforces the learning

Having hospitals and schools collaborate can collaborate through internet technology. For example, the cardiac classroom utilizes technology to transmit live video images of an ongoing surgery to students between the hospital and the science center. Students can pose questions that are answered by the surgeons. Furthermore, they offer explanation of the machines in the surgery room and this is transmitted to the students via screens simultaneously. Through internet based technology, students can have an online tour of the heart. For teachers, internet is a powerful tool for introducing and demonstrating information. Additionally, virtual field trips are possible through websites made by museums.

Internet can be used to reinforce what the students have learnt before in the classrooms (Paul , 2013). Students only need a few tips and then they are able to handle the technology. For example, Stephen Institute of Technology is a learning resource that help students learn through the internet. Real time data on the internet is used to teach and demonstrate earth science. “Passport to knowledge” is one of the sites through which students can learn much on science. In Brooklyn New York, teachers use internet to enhance learning of science through use of computers since students relate better with programs that they can react and interact with (Annenberg Foundation, 2016).

Learning by inquiry or hands-on is one way to get information but there are other resources apart from inquiry. External resources help keep students close to what they are learning in class. However, it is important to have proper timing. External resources include field trips, books, places, people and the internet.
