The Behavior of Lateness at Work
The behavior I would like to apply the two-factor model on is the lateness at work. Lateness at work is a behavior that can adversely affect the company. It is essential for the management to identify the cause of the behavior, so as to be able to set strategies to control it. Recent studies have pointed out that lateness is triggered by the low motivation of the employees at work.
Factors Related to Work Itself
Applying the two factor model of explaining behavior, a possible cause for lateness is the factors related to the work itself. Factors such as the lack of fair compensation (salary/wages), career growth, recognition and responsibility all lead to low employee motivation. Employees value their work when they believe that they are valued at the job, they receive fair compensation for their contributions to the company and the perceived future benefits of the company. Under this factor, the management should focus on offering the employees a fair compensation, provide promotions for increased benefits for the best performers/loyalty and provide an efficient platform for employees’ career growth and development.
Work Environment
The second factor in understanding the lateness behavior relates to the work environment. The company policies, for instance, can encourage or discourage the practice. If a company has a plan that requires employees to arrive at work early, it’s unlikely the employees would come late. The relationship with the supervisors/management also influences the level of motivation. When a friendly relation exists between the staff and the administration, employees become motivated to remain committed to their work and arrive at the workplace in good time.
Conclusion
In conclusion, for a manager to enhance the on job motivation, should focus on the two factors; which lead to satisfaction and those which lead to dissatisfaction. The choice of the motivation factor should consider both basic the high-end needs since as revealed by Herzberg, they all influence the employees’ motivation at work.
