1984 and technology

Technological development and changes are often an area that is considered to act on its beliefs and perceptions (Liang et al.). The conceptual flow that the world's technical advances observe is not the same as that found in other areas (Goriparthi et al.). This is mostly due to the fact that technology has surpassed all fields, making it the foundation of their growth. A case in point is the world of medicine and health sciences, which extensively rely on scientific inventions of instruments and surgical procedures, which are all different types of technical occurrences (Sanakulov et al.). In the advent of the error of technological advancements, it was up to us to either warmly welcome it or protest against it. Seemingly, human beings chose to welcome it with open arms and let it take control of all the aspects of their lives.

Owing to the depth in which scientific inventions have taken their course, it is rather difficult to interfere with its course in any way whatsoever. Even though fundamental alterations may be done, they cannot be significant enough to cause any severe changes (Goriparthi et al.). In the context of most articles on technology, the authors base their arguments on the assumption and the thought that some social levels pose damage to the fundamentals of technology which is entirely untrue according to the recent statistics about technology and the steps it has taken to its elevation point (Mobarakeh et al.).

Science and Technology

Science and technology were both factors that most people thought that would go on developing over time. Most inventors were busy making use of their names by thinking and racking their minds finding the equipment that was still missing so that they would invent it and give glory to their names (Liang et al.). “Science and technology were developing at a prodigious speed, and it seemed natural to assume they would go on developing.”( ORWELL 409, 179).On the other hand, as the inventors went through hell thinking hard every day, the people were happy enjoying the inventions and how they had made their lives better in particulate aspects.

The ships, railways, electricity, bulbs, vehicles and land lines were already up and running, and all that the people could do was muse at how easy their lives had become with the advent of such things (Sanakulov et al.). Contrary to anticipations, the people who made the aforementioned possible were just fuzzily happy because they still felt the world had a long way to go. “This failed to happen, partly because of the impoverishment caused by the long series of revolutions and wars.” (ORWELL 409,179). However, things did not go as most people thought they would as the inventions did not go on as it was anticipated owing to the long series of revolutions and wars. The people also got impoverished in the same context making their lives a living hell (Liang et al.).

Course of Technological Developments

The current generation enjoys the features that came through due to the various technological advancements in the recent centuries without knowing the price that workers had to pay. In the advent of technology, some areas were identified as to have minerals while others were discovered to be rich in vegetables such as rubber (Saunders). “All the disputed territories contain valuable minerals, and some of them yield important vegetable products such as rubber.”(ORWELL 12). It is the abundance of the vegetables that made the people think of coming up with industries that would process and manufacture other food products out of the available vegetables (Mercado). In so doing, the people would get a variety of food products to consume and help keep the growing demand for food under control.

After the discovery of the valuables came the urge to extract them in plenty. In the same line, the need for workers arose, and most people were conscripted to work in either mines or farms. The good part was that they had gotten a means of livelihood that would help sustain the needs of their families (Liang et al.). However, the only problem was they were being worked for very long hours, under strict conditions yet they got petite pay for their services. The people were seen as being the providers of cheap labor for their governments (Mobarakeh et al.). “But above all, they contain a bottomless reserve of cheap labor.” (ORWELL 13). After much thought, the whites were seen to be weak and were working at a very slow rate which brought the need for slaves and slave trade (Novin). Blacks were taken away from their families to work as slaves for the whites without pay, and all they were offered was food for their servitude.

Liberty and Equality

When technology first came into place, most people knew it would be the factor that would make true equality possible for everyone. “If technology made equality possible, they would lose all their power.” (ORWELL 74). This was because the people knew that only technology would create the means by which the ruthless leaders would be abdicated from their positions of power. This was the thought that made the people working hard to invent machines to strain in creating weapons of war. They knew that to get the leaders from their ranks would be hard and people would fight for what they believed was right (Liang et al.). But to do so, they needed weapons that would put them at the forefront of what was either anticipated or not.

Socialism and Socialistic Thoughts

The people felt that they were overworked and their wages were just the same even though they worked over time sometimes. The latter made their instincts to pull together and work towards a common goal that was to fight for their rights and freedoms from their leaders and oppressors (Novin). In so doing, they were acting on socialistic thoughts without knowing. Their perception of socialism was that the best way to creating and establishing their equality and freedom. “Although Socialism was established to create liberty and equality (the perfect or Utopian society), the new middle groups would make changes in it.” (ORWELL 74).Most philosophers argue that there is no such thing as a perfect or Utopian society owing to the fact that each society has issues that it’s trying to settle which makes it incomplete at some point.

The War

According to George Orwell (68), the war was one of the means that hindered the continued developments that technology was striving to create (Skiba). The main aim of waging war was to exhaust the weapon inventions without causing a subsequent rise in the living standards of the people. “The primary aim of modern warfare… is to use up the products of the machine without raising the general standard of living.” (ORWELL 68).In short, it was a perfect way of getting rid of the weapons that had been invented forgetting the fact that the people who invented them still had the technical know-how of making more of what they had worked so hard to destroy (Zhao).

Conclusion

Conclusively, George Orwell’s line of thought was one of the best. The real-life inspiration that was behind Orwell's fictional article was the manner in which technology had taken control of all the aspect of the people's lives, yet they did not even realize it. He felt devastated at how the leaders were using the technological inventions to exercise their ruthless control on the people as though they did not have their rights. The article that George wrote was his way of alluding to what would be taking place in the 21st century (Skiba). His allusion is partially true judging from the way in which the people heavily rely on the media which is a part of the technology to make their lives comforting (Goriparthi et al.). Technology has been enhanced to make the lives of the people better and more comfortable in comparison to the earlier years.

In the 21st century, the teachers base the curriculum on the inventions that have been put into place and ways in which all that took place. In so doing, the students are in a better position to devise their ways of making the devices better.
