The Use of Gestures in Communication

Purpose of the Study (In your own words) - What were the authors studying and why? What did they expect to find (i.e., what were the hypotheses?)

The journal Action Speaks Louder That Gesture When You Are 2 Years Old entails a discussion about a study on the behavioural aspects of children. The interpretation of gestures has been a challenge affecting most people. The purpose of the study involves the explorations on the features and functions of iconic gestures that create complexity in young children to effectively interpret them compared to the instrumental actions. The study gives an indication of how children that bear the ages of 2.5 have the ability to interpret information in a handshake that is a simple gesture. This takes place through performance although it seems to be much worse compared to the ones done by children at the four. The study explains how children at the ages of 2.5 years have easy time interpreting information in hands compared to other ages.

The use of gestures is often used while we communicate through speaking. It is common for us to sue hands to give an illustration on what we intend to communicate that cannot be used while speaking. In most cases, adults have a difficult time understanding on the effective ways of communicating with children. Research gives the indication that children have a difficult time understanding the information conveyed with gestures (Novack and Filippi, 2018). The use of iconic gestures in communication is the issue that creates difficulty in them understanding the actual information conveyed through the process. The action calls for the use of the correct language in communication to ensure that bonding takes place. Children have to reach a certain age before they develop a better understanding of specific situations. it demands that the parents understand the correct age to facilitate a proper understanding of the matter.

Methodology - Review the basic methods. How did they measure what they were studying? What type of people were they studying?

The study included 36 participants. The participants came from volunteer families. Eighteen of them were of the age 2.5years and 4 years. The children were identified based on their ethnic background that played an elucidative role in their identification. The children were given a game to play in order to determine the effectiveness of the gestures (Novack and Filippi, 2018). The use of test trials is also applied as the children participants are evaluated. A total of six test trials were given to the children to assess their level of understanding gestures and gain a proper knowledge towards the matter. An analysis strategy was used to assess the validity of the study. After the recording of the results, it was a necessity for better techniques to be developed in order to understand the situation better.

Purpose of the Study (In your own words) - What were the authors studying and why? What did they expect to find (i.e., what were the hypotheses?)

The results indicated that the 2-year-old participants had a poor interpretation of gestures. The four-year-olds were much better compared to the 2 years. The use of instrumental gestures in the interpretation of the information is essential in this case. It demands the creation of better tools that are meant to work for the interest of the public. It evident that the use of simple gestures need to be applied while dealing with children as it leads to the creation of a proper understanding of the situation (Novack and Filippi, 2018). A look at the second study result explain how the use of shape information is most likely to have a positive interpretation of information. It demands that the children are to be communicated through the use of the technique based on the fact that adults are able to connect with the children through the use of the form of gestures.

Results and Discussion - What did the researchers find? Did the results support or fail to support the authors' hypotheses? What is the meaning of the results?

Personal Reflection -

The study gives a proper illustration to the stages in which one needs to ensure that the uses of gestures are effectively utilized. According to me, the study was a success based on the results that were collected all through the process as they define the ability to have a proper understanding of the information conveyed (Novack and Filippi, 2018). They give the actual portrayal of the results that one needs to understand the use of gestures in a proper way. Ideally, it gives me the required insight that I need while interpreting information that pertains the interest of children while communicating through gestures. The study enabled me to learn how to use correct communication tools while dealing with children. It provides me with a better insight on how to deal with certain situations that concern the use of gestures in communication.

Conclusion

In summary, the study explains how children at the ages of 2.5 years have easy time interpreting information in hands compared to other ages. The use of gestures is often used while we communicate through speaking. It is common for us to sue hands to give an illustration on what we intend to communicate that cannot be used while speaking. Ideally, the results indicated that the 2-year-old participants had a poor interpretation of gestures.  On the other hand, the four-year-olds were much better compared to the 2 years. The use of instrumental gestures in the interpretation of the information is essential in this case.  Additionally, the study included 36 participants. The participants came from volunteer families. Eighteen of them were of the age 2.5 years and 4 years. The children were identified based on their ethnic background that played an elucidative role in their identification.
