The role of judges

Judges throughout History

Judges have been employed throughout history to preside over court trials and other judicial procedures in order to guarantee that those taking part in the legal system are treated fairly. The judge works longer hours to prepare for the hearings, and they can be either elected or chosen by the government. Additionally, judges are expected to be accessible in emergency circumstances. The need for judges to advance their education to meet societal requirements has arisen as a result of the justice system's evolution over the past few years. Judges have progressively gained independence from the monarchy and government. Modern justice system traces its origin from Henry ii (1154-1189) who formed a jury of 12 local knit individuals to solve the disputes over land ownership. He chose five personal members of his household comprising of three laymen and two clergies under the supervision of the wise men. This gave rise to the court of the common plea. Changes evolved slowly through the 14th century. The first professional judges and magistrates of the bench in 1217 were dean of St Paul and martin de Pateshull of Norfolk. After the era of payments and bribes in 13th centuries, judges were obligated to swear that they were not comprised for any reward from any party involved in litigation. Judicial salaries were also increased during this era. (UK judiciary system).

Evolution of the Justice System

A new type of court began to emerge which were called magistrate courts in 1285 after the Anglo Saxon moot courts. However, over the years, the justice system has evolved leading to a new era of judges. Back to the USA, the first chief justice was John Jay in 1789 and was appointed by George Washington. Federal judges in the US are appointed for life by the president with the approval of the senate. The judge can be removed from office through impeachment. Judges should be of a sober mind with the ability and capacity to ensure that the judicial proceedings are followed according to the rules of conduct. He should be in a position to determine the credibility of witnesses. Judges are required to hear criminal cases and impose fines as outlined by government regulations.

Reasons for Pursuing Law

There are some reasons that made me put all my effort and passion in pursuing law. Status in the society is one of the reasons. Over the past years, law students are seen to be accorded a big title and are respected in the society. People always look for help and solutions from among the law graduates. The other reason is to ensure that justice prevails in all circumstances. My purpose in law is to serve the society and particularly the marginalized groups that lack sufficient knowledge of the law, and hence the people in power take advantage of them. My purpose in law is to stand for the poor, those who lack money to pay great lawyers during their proceedings. The third reason why I have ventured in this career is to have a good life. To earn from professionalism to better my standards of living and advance in my studies. There is also a great advantage of understanding the law of the country as it enables a person to know what he or she is required by the law, rights, and responsibilities as stipulated by the constitution. Study of law will also improve my intellectual skills and relationships with other people.

Despite being in law giving you an insight into a variety of another discipline, a person does not become professionally qualified in the other field. Due to increasing study of law, the market has been left flooded with some graduates lacking a job opportunity. (Max., 2015, pp 2). Some people have also used the law to victimize others. They have used judicial proceedings to defend a crime they commit, and in most cases, they deny others justice. The discipline also requires huge sums of money and much dedication in order of understanding various concepts. (Max.,2015, pp 1)
