There is an incident of an interpersonal situation which I have ever encountered, and I am going to talk about it today. I am a freelance conference interpreter, and when an organization requires an interpreter, I may be hired, and I can either be provided by the meal from the organization. The meal is either written or sometimes not written down. Last year, I was working with a certain company, and when the lunchtime arrived, they stated that my lunch was not budgeted. I pretended that I felt nothing about the same, but later I asked the manager who stated that I could have taken the lunch since everything was budgeted.
Even though the manager told me that my food was budgeted, I still felt that they did not honor me and during that period, I appeared like someone who was begging for food or doing something which was not my right. The first day when I addressed the issue to the company, they stated that the management would address the issue immediately so that I could be sharing food with others like it had been the norm of the company. However, it is funny that every time we went for trips, I bought my food using my money since they failed to provide me with the food just like what happened in the first day (Hargie, 2016). Therefore, I realized that proper communication is important since the manager stated that I should have been provided with food during the whole period of the trip but maybe, he never communicated the same to the relevant people concerned, and it made me stay hungry the rest of the days we attended the tour.
Part II
During the whole period of the trip, communication was a vital practice since that is my area of specialization where I interpret for various people in different languages. Therefore, discussion among the people was inevitable, but since I have to observe all the required professional ethics, I had to ensure that we had excellent communication and all people understood one another even though they were from different backgrounds (Hargie, 2016). Discussion occurred especially when we wanted to identify different things, animals or maybe as a way of interaction. Notably, the tour was all about visiting a national park and enjoying the holiday. It involved different people ranging from kids to adults and a lot of ethics needed to be observed.
The behavior of the people was quite recommendable and every person respected each other even though we all come from different backgrounds. People did not express any discrimination even though there was an incident where I was denied food; I believe that it was a management’s lack of proper communication. Otherwise, I believe that everything was done the way it is supposed to be done since every person carried his or her practice the best way possible (Hargie, 2016). I can also confidently state that we enjoyed everything even though there were some challenges that any human being should expect on any occasion.
Part II Chapter 1
Communication is a vital undertaking on any occasion. During our trip, it was a significant undertaking which involved all the aspects of communications such as the channel which was the mouth and face to face communication. Most of our conversation involved talking directly or calling one another in case a person went to a place where he or she could not be seen. During that period, I was the interpreter, and the receivers of the message were the people who could not understand a specific language, and I was the one responsible for interpreting. Therefore, I had to decode so that I could ensure that everyone on the trip could understand the meaning of everything which went on. Also, it was important to provide that people interacted positively and shared ideas even though they came from different backgrounds and shared different values (Hargie, 2016). Therefore, it was critical for me to ensure that all the necessary mode of communication was enacted.
Chapter 2
Even though we ensured that throughout the process, there was proficient communication among all the people. There were still challenges that we encountered during the trip. For instance, due to the language differences, many people could not relate with others well since they could not understand each other’s language. Additionally, it is very normal for any human beings to have a lot of differences express emotions and establish relationships especially when they are not familiar with one another (Hargie, 2016). Therefore, some people believed that their language and their way of behavior were better than others thus ended up despising one another. However, it is something that anyone would expect in any normal social settings.
Other people could not express their emotions or create a positive relationship proficiently. However, I was a different person because even after I was denied the food, I still related with others in a very positive way. Nevertheless, other people did not have human personalities to share ideas with one another or even solve any dispute which may arise (Hargie, 2016). I used to resolve any conflicts which occurred in any situation to ensure that we had a viable environment and all the practices that we had planned to undertake went on well as we had intended.
Chapter 4
During the trip, many people were egocentric, and they were unable to take another person’s perspective. Everyone believed that he or she understood everything in their ways. Even when a person came up with developmental ideas, he or she was not supported by others. Later on, I came to realize that people who helped one another shared common perspectives. For instance, if the shared a common language, and ha the same way of communication, it was easy for them to interact freely (Hargie, 2016). However, when they realized that there were other people from different regions or different language set up they could oppose everything blindly even when they could not understand entirely what it meant.
Chapter 5
A personal character can be depicted by the way a person communicates or shares information with others. An individual who is emotional expresses it in word of mouth, and it can be easy to identify the character of such a person. Most of the people who we attended the trip together indicated a lot of characters which I never expected from them. Some were very vulgar in their language while others portrayed a moral understanding of all their practices (Hargie, 2016). However, it is recommendable since such things are expected in any society. Since I was the interpreter, I realized that some of the listeners had a lot of negative emotions towards each other. Trustworthiness and the moral character of others were different maybe because they exhibited different personalities.
Chapter 6
Communication does not only involve discussion through word of mouth. It also entails other aspects such as hands move to enhance a better way of communication. Research conducted by Hargie (2016), indicates that connection through the other parts of the body improves a better understanding by the listeners. When interpreting, I ensured that I implemented other body movements and other parts of the body to ensure that the listeners understood everything that I was explaining.
Non-verbal cues are also other examples of non-verbal communication. A person can describe a particular thing without necessarily having to use the verbal cues which are common in the contemporary world. I could implement the non-verbal cues, especially when specifying the size of a particular animal or object (Hargie, 2016). As such, it would be easy for the listeners to understand everything that I would describe without a lot of struggle like it would have happened if I could not implement those cues.
Part III
From the trip that I attended, I believe that the interpersonal communication was effective since we could relate with one another proficiently. In as much as there were some differences in conversation, we tried to fix everything and work together as one family without necessarily causing any emotional or verbal distress. I even gained a lot from other people from different social setting. I understood how people from different social backgrounds behaved differently from the other.
Most of the observations that I made were descriptive since all that I am talking about is a description of what I encountered from the tour. Communication is an important aspect everywhere in the world, but not many people understand that perspective (Hargie, 2016). It ensures that people come together to share what they know and also learn from others what they do not know. Therefore, I believe the entries in the chapter reflect on the understanding of interpersonal communication since we were involved in multiple occasions of dialogue through sharing, knowing the cultural differences of people depending on their origin or the social status. Also, the text uses most of the concepts we have learned in class about interpersonal communication and the lectures notes where most of the class work is interpersonal communication.
Interpersonal communication is an important aspect of all the undertakings of life. People have to communication to enhance a social entity, know each other better and share different ideas depending on their understanding. Being an interpreter in various occasions, I have realized that communication is vital especially when people want to gain important ideas or information critical to their lives. Also, I have recognized that connection is not all about the essential things of life but even small things that people despise. For instance, when I took people for the trip as the interpreter, I realized that people could simple questions which seemed irrelevant, but in a real sense, they make a lot of impact in their lives. Therefore, I believe that interpersonal communication and any other type of connection should be enacted in all aspects of life since it plays an essential role in both the growth and development of an individual.
