Communication
Communication refers to the exchange of information between two or more people with the aim of expressing thoughts, ideas, and feelings. The exchange can be done through verbal and non-verbal cures as people interact face-to-face or through the use of technological devices such as call, text, letter, or email. An effective communication involves conveying the intended message in a clear and simple manner which can be understood by the audience. It means engaging in interaction activities such as receiving and transmitting messages, understanding and giving instructions, learning new information, asking questions or making requests with ease. Further good communication involves adapting oneself in different situations such as being able to relate with a person from different social background as well as avoiding and resolving conflicts. A good communicator must, therefore, be empathetic in order to understand how the audience will interpret a particular behavior or words. Communication is usually a two-way channel; this means that the people involved in the process must adopt good listening skills to be able to understand the message conveyed.
Future Career and Communication
I believe that communication will be an essential tool in my future career. First, it will aid in the coordination and building of teams. Employees in every organization must work together to achieve the organizational goals. In order to relate in a friendly manner and understand my colleagues, I will need to have good communication skills. In particular, we must have a common language that will enable us communicate effectively. In addition, every colleague will be expected to have effective listening skills to understand what the other employees want. This will similarly apply to the employers who must also listen to our needs in order to address them. With such communication skills, the team will be able to build strong working relationship and increase loyalty towards my place of work.
Multicultural Work Environment
I am sure that I will be working in a multicultural environment as over 90% of current workplaces have employees from different backgrounds. Good communication will, thus, be needed to manage the diversity of the employees. With mixed races, gender, or religious beliefs, it is always easier for people to accidentally offend their workmates. In case there are no clear review or promotion rules for employees, then the minority groups may feel discriminated against. Thus, effective communication can ensure that such cases do not arise. Employees who understand the values of different cultures will ensure they do not harm them intentionally, either verbally or by acts of discrimination. Similarly, the employers will utilize effective communication skills to put in place clear guidelines which would help to treat all employees equally.
Handling Challenging Scenarios
Effective communication strategies will also help me and my workplace handle challenging scenarios. In case of a bad communication, an employer may issue a warning letter due to lack of understanding of the real issues. With proper strategies of communication, the employers are able to assess and analyze situations before taking actions against workers. As an employee, I may get nervous during presentations due to language barrier or fear of not using correct communication skills. By learning about how address an audience and gaining eye contact, I am sure that cases of nervousness would not arise in future. Communication will, therefore, play a significant role in my future career.
