Elle Woods
The character Elle Woods is a main character in Amanda Brown's 2001 novel, Legally Blonde. She also appears in the 2002 film adaptation and the 2007 Broadway musical version. The character has been played by eleven different actresses. The original role was played by Sheridan Smith. However, when Smith left the production, Susan McFadden took over. Carley Stenson has since played Elle Woods.
In Legally Blonde, Elle Woods is a white, blonde, rich girl from Hollywood who has dreams of attending Harvard Law School. In the movie, she succeeds and wins a notable case, graduating as the top undergrad in her class. She achieves her goal and gains a newfound sense of self-worth. The movie not only showcases Elle's character, but also promotes the message that looks shouldn't limit a woman's abilities.
The movie is a fantasy for white women. Elle's shoes are Prada, and she believes that only gay men would notice. This line of reasoning helps her fight the prosecution's argument that she had an affair. Then, during testimony, she outs Enrique.
Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon is a legally blonde actress who is 25 years old. She is the daughter of a surgeon and a pediatric nurse. She began taking acting classes at a young age and was active as a Girl Scout and high school cheerleader. In 1998, she was accepted to Stanford University, but dropped out after one year in order to work on the movie TWILIGHT.
Reese Witherspoon's role in "Devil's Knot" based on Atom Egoyan's true crime book examines the controversial case of the West Memphis Three. The film is set in Arkansas and features Witherspoon as the mother of one of the three young victims. Atom Egoyan noted that this role required a lot of emotional commitment from Witherspoon. However, the actress seemed ready for the role and was happy to work with the director. The movie was filmed in Georgia and Witherspoon was expecting her third child during the shoot.
The original film was a hit, and the sequel was developed for a 2003 release. The sequel starred Reese Witherspoon in the role of Elle Woods, but moved to Washington D.C. It also starred Sally Field, Regina King, Dana Ivey, and Bob Newhart. It grossed over $1 billion at the box office.
