History has many examples of people whose personality has had different behaviors depending on the environment and the company of people present at that time. One such individual for this paper is Gregory Smith. The fact that his parents were just peasants and raised up in an environment where the youth are prone to abuse of drugs as well as physical assault of the vulnerable within the neighborhood may have contributed to the unchanging cynic attitude of Gregory.
Gregory has personified the figure of a person who is often cynical about the people and the world in general. Moreover, Gregory firmly holds the view that evil and right do not have the flexibility to act as the yardstick for defining good and bad. Additionally, the character of Gregory is not hesitant in judging and categorizing people based on what he sees and the way they act. One may think that Gregory is unreasonable because sometimes, he feels that everything is just the way it appears to be for no apparent reason. The unrelenting cynic attitude of Gregory has caused him to lose most of his friends because nearly all of them complain at the fact that he cannot see any good at whatever they propose to do. Interestingly, Gregory exhibits this character from Monday to Friday during working days and particularly to his colleagues at work and partly to the family members in the evening after work.
On Sundays when Gregory goes to church for his religious obligations, the congregants who worship alongside him attest that he cuts the figure of a different person that is entirely different from the one at work. Fellow churchgoers testify that Gregory is often optimistic on Sundays and sits on the front bench where he at times joins the choir and participate in singing during the service. Not once but many times has he volunteered to lead the other choir members in some of the songs as well as preside over prayers. After the church service, church leaders and some of the congregants do remain behind to plan for the activities of the next day of worship, and Gregory has not missed any of the meetings. He not only attends the meetings but is also an active participant who proposes various alternatives and motivates the rest of the members to keep in mind all the resolutions they had decided to do for the good and progress of their church. Furthermore, Gregory has also been assisting in counseling the youth groups on Sundays after worship hours with the intention of equipping them with life skills and the right attitude that would enable them to make good decisions.
Another striking contrast is the manner in which Gregory has conducted himself after relocating from the neighborhood where he grew up until he secured his current employment. The new neighbors see a very different person who participates in community development initiatives such as environmental conservation by planting trees and cleaning the rivers. Such actions are supposed to make the world a better place for the coming generations. Previously, Gregory would not see any good intentions in the persons who started a program such as that one; he would always question its intentions and strive to point out how it was meant to serve the interests of a particular individual or group of persons. Someone who had lived and interacted with him would be forgiven to think that Gregory was now living a life of another person different.
The life of Gregory at home when he is with his nuclear family that is his wife and children has been one with the unpredictable and contrasting relationship. In some instances, Gregory seems to enjoy a cordial relationship with his family members. Gregory has had amazing moments with his family where they have gone for vacations site seeing or even for a family adventure. His kids have had wonderful moments where their dad has showed them love and been kind to them by buying them presents whenever they performed well in school.
However, there have been periods where Gregory has displayed violent and horrid behavior towards his wife and children. One would not even think that he has at any given point treated his children with fatherly care. The police have arrested Gregory three times and charged him in court for harassment and gross violation of the rights of his children and wife. At one instance, one of his male child who tried to resist his father’s cruelty was taken to the hospital for the treatment of his arm because his father had walloped him that he even dislocated his right arm. Moreover, the state department dealing with the rights of children have summoned Gregory once to explain the reasons for mistreating his children and wife. Additionally, they also pressed charges against Gregory in court, and the judge presiding over the case delivered a damning verdict where he termed Gregory as a threat to humans who could not earn the trust of his children.
