Wellness Concepts in Ayurvedic, Tibetan, and Traditional Chinese Medicine


Wellness allows people to live happy and healthy lives. The wellness concepts of Ayurvedic, Tibetan, and traditional Chinese medicine share and differ. This is determined by the three people's attitudes toward wellness. The body must be balanced in order for one to be happy and healthy. The three philosophies have one thing in common: they are all holistic in character. This is because their purpose is usually to promote a person's health rather than only treat an illness. This is related to the concept of wellbeing since if one sickness is treated, other diseases may develop in the body. For instance, some women usually have severe cramps when they receive their monthly periods. They take painkillers but the pain does not disappear and most ignore it. Some of them usually suffer from Endometriosis. "Endometriosis is a debilitating and chronic disease a condition that was once confused with painful cramps" (Redfern, 2015). If they just treat the pain, the disorder is left untreated and thus the individual lack wellness. This also relates to the wellness challenge of illness confusion which results in inadequate treatment.


Differences Among Ayurvedic, Tibetan, and Traditional Chinese Medicine


The differences among the three philosophies Ayurvedic, Tibetan, and traditional Chinese medicine is on the beliefs that the wellness of the body depends on a balance of different factors. For the Ayurvedic philosophy, the body should have a balance between the mind, body and the spirit (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (U.S.). 2009). The Tibetan philosophy believes that the body should have a balance of long, tripa and baekan energies (Bradley, 2013). The traditional Chinese medicine believes that the wellness of the body depends on a balanced interrelation and connection to the world (Leung, 2015).


My Changed Conceptualization of Wellness


Learning about different philosophies have changed my conceptualization of wellness. I have learned that it is good to focus on the health of the body rather than symptoms of a disease. This is because one may be suffering different diseases some which their symptoms can be confused with others.
