Coleen's Story

Raised in a Family of Four

Coleen was always hardworking since she was the eldest among her siblings. Her parents who were formerly peasant farmers had been separated from them for more than a decade. The father was accused of stealing a neighbor's cow to sell and get a way out to ensure Coleen could go to school. It was the most grave and rare things he had done, probably the most regrettable situation he would wish he did not even fathom while languishing his life sentence in jail. Coleen's mother suffered a strange disease which left her totally insane that she could not even recognize her children. She struggled with the ailment for three and half years before succumbing through serious pains.

A Different Twist in Life

After all these tribulations, life took a different twist in the young Coleen's life. Living in the most deserted region in Sub-Saharan Africa, she had to quickly adjust to her surrounding, learning to survive the hard way in life. Coleen's siblings, Mark, Denzel and Evenessy were forced to temporarily settle with their grandparents whilst Coleen went to stay with her uncle. Fred was one wealthy businessman in the community. He had numerous businesses ranging from very many shop-outlets that served the people providing basic commodities and food item that would always be bought by locals to owning large chunks of land where he irrigated his plantations to provide fruits, maize, potatoes, tomatoes, and greens. The uncle oversupplied the community with the food products that he became the most successful man at the time when his help was needed most by the orphaned children. It was time for the young girl, ten year old Coleen to start her school as her friends and peers also did. On the first day in school, she did not have all the necessary requirements to join the nearby public school. It was required that all new pupils would go in full school uniforms including official school shoes.

Building a Legacy

Certain amount of school fees was equally required to propel all the operations in school including exams. Coleen gathered courage and went to class. She sat nervous in class not knowing where life is heading to neither having a clue of what her new school is all about. She made many friends who were all kind to her, giving her encouragements and inspirations to life. After sometime, the poor girl adapted to her school surrounding and her teachers were very impressed by her improvements in studies. They all learnt that she needed their support to build a legacy one time in the future and be able to educate her little siblings too.

Top Performer

She was a top performer in class and ultimately she gained respect among her peers and the school fraternity as well. Many of her fellows showed her the love by helping her acquire reading materials and the school official attire. In the midst of all such remarkable transformation, something strange happened. Her wealthy uncle refused to pay school fees to her since his children were not doing well in the same school. The cousins developed a slow hatred that culminated to fierce rivalry in this Coleen's new home. She was abandoned by her guardian and directed to take care of the uncle's business across the village.

Child Abuse and Dreams

Child abuse started when she was forced to do the household chores and even to tender the farms. Coleen was left alone at home to clean the dogs, take care of other domesticated animals as well preparing meals for the family. She hardly went to school. Many days absent from class, she lost focus and track of classroom activities. At home, she was violated, beaten up, lacked basic needs and ridiculed by her cousins. She deteriorated in class performance and always became last in any test done in class. Coleen could cry many times, asking rhetoric questions to herself why she was too lonely and lacked even one individual to make her dreams come true.

Realizing Her Purpose

As a teenager, she always had a dream to be a doctor that would bring several solutions to the poverty-stricken community she was raised in. Coleen's dreams seemingly dimmed by each passing day. She remembered her parents who were not available now for her and her siblings. She thought about the whereabouts of her siblings and tears cascaded her cheeks. "It is the end of me," she sighed in disbelief. Many negative thoughts crossed her mind but she was optimistic that one time, God will wipe away her griefs. She enrolled as a member of a Pentecostal church where she was taught good morals and equally learnt the ways of Almighty God according to her religious beliefs. She trusted on their spiritual leader who consoled her and gave her comfort by preaching and giving her fresh messages from the Bible.

Overcoming Adversity

Coleen later realized that God had a purpose in her life. All her siblings got sponsorship by the church and she equally got admitted to a boarding school where she completed her primary education. Coleen was so impressive and performed so well that after completion of her secondary school level, the church sponsored her to continue with studies in the world's prestigious Harvard University. Her excellent performance caught the attention of many people across their community as she did not bow to her youthful miseries. Coleen later graduated with first class honors in medicine. It was a dream come true for Coleen who did not know one time she would realize her ambitions. She got a job in Texas City, as a doctor in one of the popular city hospitals. It was at this time that she processed her siblings travel visas to United States. Living in US and being professional in her job made her realize that no one can be judged by their past experiences. Equally, she learnt that despite childhood torture, miseries, lack of parental love, guidance and support cannot deter an individual from accomplishing their dreams.

Achieving Greatness

The qualified doctor formed a mentorship program that supported poor African children who could not get a chance to prosper with their dreams. She equally built a big hospital at her native Namibia country which was named after her for reaching a greater mileage in life. Coleen National Hospital was the greatest hospital in her country and she did her best to supply drugs to it to help her people. She also trained many nurses on how to offer best medical attention to the sick people. Coleen made it out of nothing and she has been celebrated by her country as well as the United States for always giving the best in her work. Many awards have come along her way and she is happy for all that she achieved when her dreams seemed invalid. Giving thanks to all people who supported her, Coleen appreciated the Pentecostal church for making her re-define herself and reach her destination. Just like the story of Cinderella, Coleen's story has touched many hearts and has motivated many orphans and poor children to have hope for a better future.
