Leadership Self-Assessment The ability of a person or organization to not only lead but also guide other individuals or groups is referred to as the practical talent of leadership (Dubrin, 2013). The leadership self-assessment exams are thoroughly examined in this essay.
Analysis of the self-evaluation
Since a leader plays multiple roles that are all equally crucial to establishing his or her efficiency and success, leadership is thought to be an extraordinarily complex job. One of a leader's most important responsibilities is liaison, which involves communicating with both internal and external contacts. Another is acting as the figurehead, spokesperson, resource manager, and disturbance handler, among other things (Mintzberg & Westley, 1989). I find these roles as stipulated by various researchers to be extremely accurate in relation to my personal stance on leadership and the leadership assessment test undertaken. In the assessment, I managed to score 101 points, which indicates a high level of readiness for leadership roles.
In matters concerning leadership, a leader’s traits play a vital role in the determination of other people’s work performance, behaviors, attitudes as well as the overall performance of a business organization (Dubrin, 2013). The effectiveness of leaders is determined by specific personality traits such as assertiveness, courage, self-confidence, and control. From the list of necessary personality traits, self-confidence is considered to be the cornerstone of leadership. While a leader can be taught on ways of becoming; more decisive, an effective problem solver, and a good communicator and other fundamentals of leadership, without believing in oneself, true leadership will certainly exist only in title. Consequently, having performed moderately in the self-confidence assessment, one of the lessons learned is the fact that I need always to stay positive while keeping negativity at bay. Therefore, maintaining a positive self-image, high self-esteem and assurance levels which will ultimately aid in my future leadership endeavors in the workplace as self-confidence is not only crucial in accomplishing personal and organizational goals but also in taking business risks.
Having scored 91 in the proactivity assessment, this test indicates that I have average tendencies towards being proactive. For leaders to be successful in making a lasting impact, striving for proactivity; rather than reactivity, is essential. Concerning this, reactive leaders, unlike the proactive ones, tend to wait for problems to arise before taking the necessary measures in addressing them and as a result, such leaders are always scuttling from crisis to crisis (DuBrin, Dalglish, and Miller, 2006). Consequently, in order to enhance my success as a future leader, it is essential for me to becoming more proactive through some of the stated measures such as creating change in both personal and work life and always exploring new possibilities.
Charismatic leaders are very skilled communicators who possess verbal eloquence and also communicate to their followers on both a deep and emotional level. Such leaders also have a tendency of articulating captivating and compelling visions, and their large following is acquired through charm and personality. Charisma in leadership is essential as it enables leaders to not only inspire but also motivate followers to become committed to the cause or rather the organizations’ visions and also improve on their job performance levels (DuBrin, Dalglish, and Miller, 2006). The assessment test attests that I possess below average charismatic tendencies; which I consider crucial as a future business leader. Therefore, to be a charismatic leader some of the necessary changes include, expressing a warm smile more often, being sociable, and improving on my appearance.
While trust is a major issue in the contemporary business management, paradoxically, in the constantly changing business environment, trust forms a foundation for functioning relationships and co-operation. Some of the processes influenced by trust are such as information sharing, cooperation, communication as the overall productivity of the business. As an intangible and intellectual skill, leadership by trust emphasizes trustful behaviors towards workplace employees. Hence, it is the trustworthiness in the actions of a leader that matters most (Dubrin, 2013). From the assessment, most of my behavioral traits and attitudes render me a trust-worthy leader which I previously did not know. Therefore, I will uphold these behavioral traits and attitudes as a future leader, while working on those that render me as an untrustworthy leader such as lack of transparency and inability to accept feedback on behavior from others.
In conclusion, in order to become a successful leader, entrepreneurship skills are essential as they enable leaders to create and also take control of change within an organization. Moreover, entrepreneurship leadership entails solving a variety of problems and generation and implementation of new ideas (Mintzberg & Westley, 1989). The assessment test indicates that my personality makeup does not resemble that of an entrepreneur, therefore, since I gained awareness on this weakness, some of the measures to be taken include developing an interest in entrepreneurship and acquiring the necessary skills.
