Analysis of A Street Car Named Desire by Tennessee Williams

Gender Roles and Inequality

"A Streetcar Named Desire" is a movie whose most fascinating part is the gender role it depicts especially the fact that male chauvinism was apparently in the mind of many people in the society (Jordan Film). The women in the film such as Blanche had shown low self-esteem particularly when she bathed frequently and wanted to be recognized as a woman of elegance yet in real sense she was trying to attract male attention. The irony was when Blanche asked her younger sister, Stella to leave Stanley yet herself she was a product of men's dependency (Jordan Film). Gender inequality was one of the intriguing aspects of the movie. The marriage lives between Stanley and Stella as well as that of Eunice and Steve is significant in bringing out the theme of gender roles in the society in the 1940s (Jordan Film).

Masculinity and Aggression

The manner in which masculinity is portrayed in the film is sad and uncalled for. In the play, masculinity is associated with aggression and physical dominance something I believe is not proper in the society because it shows how manner fewer behaviors are entertained in the name of masculinity. Being masculine is characterized by insensitive behaviors which I tend to think that is primitive. It is sad to note that despite all the unfortunate and sheer dominance depicted in the male dominance, masculinity remains attractive and appealing to the female counterparts. I believe such behaviors are encouraged by the primitive male dominance attitude that the society believed in the olden days. I think the current society is the opposite of what is depicted in the movie because of the gender equity and respect for others.

The Power of Lies

"A Streetcar Named Desire" reveals the level of confidence individuals may have while knowing very well that they are telling lies as a way of elevating themselves. Blanche disrespectfully lies to create a different outlook simply because she wants to attract men (Jordan Film). The lies in the movie have made me think twice about my friends because perhaps they may be telling lies to look better yet I may be dying of jealousy. Lying is a vice and therefore saying it to point blank may reduce a trust I may have about someone if I later realize that it is a lie. The play has taught me not to trust everything I hear from people.

The Importance of Communication

There is an aspect of disconnect between the males and females in the film. Both genders do not express their feelings towards each other, and this tends to cause a lot of conflict amongst them. Because of poor communication, the expected smooth conversations end in fights as is the case of Stanley and Blanche (Jordan Film). Perhaps a good communication between them could have cooled down the tempers or may be made each other aware of their partner's feelings. A communication I believe is essential in any relationship.

Celebration and Morality

Another exciting aspect of the movie is death and how it brings people together. Death is closely associated with lust since almost every death is caused by a desire to have sex. The worst part is the enjoyment after a loss which shows less concern to the dead and signifies a society that is morally down. Probably, the expectation after death would have been a somber mood, but the characters throw themselves into enjoyment instead. Death is a loss which should not be celebrated unless the deceased was a terrorist or committed a crime. Celebrating the death of an individual shows the level of inhuman an individual is.

In Conclusion

In a nutshell, "A Streetcar Named Desire" proved exciting and an educative movie which teaches viewers a lot about life. The script of the play is a result of great work that deserves intense analysis.
