When describing a memory or a past incident in his life, Joey Franklin switches his text from present to past tense. He recalls how Kris Livingston's mother labored at the Taco Bell register as an illustration of this shift in tense.
For Chinese people, riding a bicycle offered a respite from the stresses of daily living. An illustration of this would be a couple riding down the road in rush hour who were able to "retreat" to a romantic setting of their own despite the haste that everyone else was in. Peasants, carpenters, florists, and other lower income groups in the society were able to ride into cities to look for customers instead of sticking to doing business only in the areas where they lived. In this aspect, the bicycle was a source of freedom of mobility.
Bicycles were a source of financial freedom to the Chinese people because with the increase in the number of bicycles used and produced, the number of bicycle repairmen also increased. The repairmen earned a living from servicing.
“Under the influence.”
Scott uses the words “reddened face” to describe how the transition from sober to drunk affected the father physically. The father’s mental aptitudes also reduced when he became drunk for example when he was sober, he could help his children multiply seven-digit numbers but the same task was impossible once he got drunk. The two demonstrate that alcohol not only affects the drinker physically, but also affects those around him.

Jessica criticizes Americans who pay for embalming by making claims that the only purpose of embalming is to make a corpse presentable for viewing in what she calls a “costly container”. In this statement, she portrays embalming as a procedure that is done merely for public show.
The entire funeral process is depicted as one lacking in emotion for example, the corpse’s lips are sown with the sides slightly upward to present a more agreeable picture.
Mitford describes the process of embalming as simply one that “revamps” the corpse to look like a doll so as to disguise the fact that the body no longer has life.
She also criticizes the fact that the deceased’s kin care little of the life their loved one lived for example a man who lived his life without ever getting a manicure will get it done in preparation for his funeral.

An analogy is the assumption that if things agree in certain areas, then they probably agree in others. Staples put forth an analogy that explains how the increase of the number of fake grades could lead to devaluation of degrees. He goes ahead to give an example of the University of Phoenix that expanded to 60 sites nation-wide in a period when almost two hundred colleges went out of business.
The commodity analogy is accurate because in the education sector, the product is the degree and the universities are the sellers whose aims are to make high profits. In order to make these high profits, the universities must attract more clients in the form of students and they do so by making the attainment of A’s easy.
“How to tame a wild tongue”
A metaphor is the use of a word or expression to mean something entirely different. Anzaldua uses a number of metaphors in her essay particularly in paragraphs 1-3. The first metaphor used in the essay was, “My mouth is a motherlode,” which describes how the tongue is an entire load all on its own.
The second metaphor is “We’re going to have to do something about your tongue.” Metaphorically, the statement explains that words are powerful and therefore they should be controlled or in other words, tamed hence the relation to the essay title.
The last metaphor is: “I’ve never seen anything as strong or as stubborn,” which means that the tongue is resilient and stubborn therefore we must watch what we say and tame our tongues.
