Decisions and Decision Management

Decisions are a vital aspect of any successful venture. Therefore, decision management is a process in decision making that involves improving and aligning organizational goals to action. Decision management ensures the decision making process yields the desired results because it employs powerful tools like organizational rules, artificial intelligence, and continuous improvement.

The Importance of Discipline in Decision Management

According to Yates (2018), decision management requires discipline. For instance, a coach puts in every effort so that the team can succeed and win all the trophies in a tournament. However, to do that, the coach requires the discipline to unite the teammates and provide reliable tactics and skills that the team can rely on to make the winning moves. During training sessions, it is common to see a coach with a notebook, scribbling down all the possible moves that a player can make to deliver a winning score. The example brings out what Lussier (2018) identified as the steps in the decision making process. A critical analysis into these steps also points out something unique in decision management. Everyone has a unique style of arriving at decisions. Hence, it is common to see managers and other senior level employees perceiving their decision as the most appropriate in driving the organization forward. When such disagreement surface in an organization, there is a need to call everything to order to avert the likelihood of resistance among junior employees who may defy one supervisor and swear allegiance to other.

Ten Cardinal Issues in Decision Management

Decision management thrives on ten cardinal issues, which Yates (2018) confidently asserts of helping managers avoid costly mistakes when making decisions. Of all the cardinal issues, the greatest of them all is the “need”. All decisions are made based on what the organization needs for it to make it to the next step. Decision management is best depicted from a decision tree (Meleanca, 2013). Every decision is tracked from the source and available alternatives and then a forecast of the likely results are tabled for analysis. While using such a decision-tree structure, it is important to consider the decision-making conditions like “certainty, risk, and uncertainty” (Yates, 2018). Proper utilization of decision management determines the extent with which organizations remain competitive in the market.

Rational Thinking and Strategic Decision Management

Decision require rational thinkers. Strategic decision management is an issue of concern because every organization wants to convert organizational behavior into tangible results. The decision to utilize a unique decision style depends on the anticipated results. For instance, when there is a greater risk in committing to a project, decision makers need to consider the magnitude of the decisions. Offering to sponsor a team or unrecognized players is such a great risk for an organization to make. However, the decision here banks on the hope that the team or player has the potential to rise through the ranks, and as this happens, the organizational brand also benefits. But then, if the opposite happens, the organization can loose a lot of money in investment for having sponsored the team and players. Today, every company is willing to use international football teams, players, and athletes as their brand ambassadors. However, none of them was ready to even offer a listening ear to these top figures when they required support to reach where they are today. Why? Because organizations calculated the risks involved and the best alternative was to avoid investing even the smallest amount of money in what they were unwilling to lose.

Conclusion

Decision management determines the success of the organization because it influences the decision-making process. Proper analysis, forecasts, and brainstorming provide a roadmap towards turning failure into success. By understanding the guidelines and investing in team work and spirit, organizations can rip the benefits of decision management. Furthermore, managers and leaders must utilize decision management and fit it in their styles of leadership.
