Death has a profound impact on the social lives of the individuals, especially on those who have lost their loved one. The form of media used has improved over the years mainly due to the rapid advancement in the levels of technology. For instance, some of the media include television, movie, music, visual arts and so forth (Deluga, 2014). Therefore, this paper discusses the role of visual arts as an expression tackling death.
Visual arts have long-lasting mental impressions on the minds of the grieved individuals as far as death is concerned. Passing on of friends and relatives are some of the sad events in the lives of human being. Sometimes the pain is great to handle, thus, the coming together of people to console with the bereaved. Usually, this form of media conveys a large volume of information as opposed to conventional approaches such as print media (Deluga, 2014). For example, the epic painting, “Lamentation of Christ” created in the 1480s by Andrea Mantegna convey different emotions regarding the death of Jesus Christ as shown in the figure:
Figure 1: Lamentation of Christ
The painting shows the body of Christ lying lifeless as the Virgin Mary and John watch over in deep grieve. The inclusion of the details including nails on the cross presents the tragedy that comes along with death (Deluga, 2014).
Therefore, it is imperative to note that visual arts also play significant roles as far as death is concerned. Such methods tend to be permanent serving many generations on the same important event.
