The Role of Media in US Government

This essay will discuss how different US presidents used media and the compelling advantages of modern media over media used by presidents Lincoln, Roosevelt and Kennedy. The paper will conclude by mentioning the relevance of these media.

Lincoln used brief speech to address immediate New Jersey citizens. It was the only active media at that time. He said “if I do my duty and do my right you will sustain me.” (Baynton 2016). Roosevelt used radio to address group of citizen and to discuss issues affecting America like bank mechanics. Radio was relevant during this time since the majority of Americans used it. His famous speech is “I want to talk for a few minutes with the comparative few who understand about banking.” ("Franklin Roosevelt - Fireside Chat #1, On the Banking Crisis (1933)"). Kennedy frequently used television media. Television reached a wide range of citizens at this time. One of his speech is “Let us never negotiate out of fear but let us never fear to negotiate.” ("President John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address"). Trump uses his public and private Twitter accounts to interact with voters on issues concerning the United States. It attracts different individuals around the globe. Trump tweeted “just spoke to John Kasich to express condolences and prayers to all for the horrible shooting of two great police officers.” On the shooting of officers. (Wilson 2018).

Today’s president of US has more persuasive advantage of media than the previous ones. Due to the availability of different types of Medias than before. Modern technology enables information to travel fast around the globe, unlike speech and radio.
