The first week in college
The first week in college was an exciting experience that came with its difficulties. It was quite hard to adapt to the new life more so the fact that the structure if the education called for personal reading. The new system was a different phase for me it was hard to read on my own especially the science subjects that contained hard jargons. I failed my first exams because I was not an avid reader and comprehension of the technical terms proved to be a challenging task. The difficulty in reading weighed on my emotions, and I remember feeling down because of my poor grades. In most cases, I did not want to go to class as I felt like everyone knew I was an underperformer. My lecturers kept on pressuring me to improve my grades which only added to my depression. The constant pressure from my teachers, my parents, and myself made me develop a negative attitude towards my courses. However, I decided to seek help from one of my teachers who agreed to help me with my studies.
Learning to read with all five senses
Every day after classes my teacher tutored me how to read to understand and not cram information. It was quite impressive to realize that reading includes all the five senses which make it easy to understand and retain information. Through the help of my teacher, I developed an interest in reading as it became more exciting than it was when I joined college. I watched the lecture and practical videos while writing short notes about them. I also learned to differentiate the smell of different chemicals especially in Chemistry which was quite impressive. I also used the method of creating acronyms that helped me remember a lot of information. I also had poor listening skills which hindered my writing skills. I learned to listen while noting valuable information, the words difficult words that I could not understand I noted them down and looked up their meaning later. Some materials in class require detailed description and touching the elements helped me remember the exact properties of certain chemicals.
The impact of my teacher's help
My teacher was a great help, especially in reading. The extra lessons we had helped in increasing my confidence in personal reading as well as writing. This experience during the first few months of college helped me learn the hard way. I can now confidently write my assignments and read on my own. This experience also taught me that reading and writing is exciting when incorporated using the five senses. It makes it easy to understand and retain information. I have also realized that my creativity has developed immensely. It is interesting to read but using the senses makes it more fun. I got to learn the basics that involve reading and writing, and now I can write creative stories. I have also learned the importance of research when writing and reading. Through research, I am now able to understand many things in class especially the technical words used in class. I no longer feel sorry about my grades since I have improved to become a better student. I confidently face my classmates, my teachers, and parents since they are all proud of the improvement I make. In future, I intend to use the knowledge I learned to write books and reading guidelines for reading and writing for students.
