Role of Media in Arab Spring

The essay I am going to complete deals with Arab Spring as an example of a revolution. The essay will use globalization as a tool to explain the extent to which increased interconnectedness among the people in the Middle East exposed them to issues they never had access to in the prior period. Mediatization, on the other hand, will be of great help in explaining the extent to which media pervasiveness facilitated the protests in large scale. Social media also played crucial role in the whole event of Arab Spring. The research plan appears in the table below:

Wardleworth, N., 2016. The Roman Maghrébin in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. Contemporary French " Francophone Studies. 20(1), pp.141–149.

The article looks into the role of the media in the process of the Arab Spring. Given the role it played in the dissemination of information to the participants, the article highlights the profiles of the authors and their immense contribution in assisting the people in their daily moves towards the liberation process. The article further focuses on the nature of the literary works of the various authors, and the possible role that the formats used would assist in proper understanding of the underlying issues that led to the revolution.

I will argue and support the fact that the media supported the Arab Spring to a great extent. The role it played in the process of the revolution was immense, as it gave the people access to information about the issues affecting them, which they could not access without the media. With the media, the protestors sensitized each other on matters of common interests, and enlightened one another on the best approach to use to handle the issues in the best way possible.

Rugh, W.A., 2017. Bullets and bulletins: media and politics in the wake of the Arab uprisings. Middle East Policy. 24(4), pp.186–188.

This article addresses the role of the media in bringing to light the political system in each of the Arab nations that took part in the Arab Spring. Though the political systems tried all the ways and means of quieting the other forms of media, they could not stop the use of the social media platforms. Using such platforms, the protestors would communicate with each other behind the veils of political control.

Using the information from this article, I will prove that the media contributed significantly to the revolution in the Arab countries. The use of social media, in particular, was of great importance in airing the issues that needed attention.

Kavanaugh, A., Sheetz, S.D., Skandrani, H., and Fox, E.A., 2017. Media use by young Tunisians during the 2011 revolution vs. 2014 elections. Information Polity: The International Journal of Government " Democracy in the Information Age. 22(2/3), pp.137–158.

The authors acknowledge the need to have citizen participation in the governance of their countries. The article proves that nations that exert excess control over the media give their citizens access to unfiltered information from other sources, such as the social media and the internet. Such information was the reason behind the uprising in the Arab nations, and the media assisted the protesters to raise their grievances.

I will use this article to confirm that the media is the most reliable source of credible information. Any attempt to block the media will give the government a hard time in controlling the information that the public receives from other sources. I will further argue and prove that information is crucial to the expansion of good governance, and there is a need for openness on the side of the government to prevent suspicion, which would in turn spark a revolution.

Maltby, S., 2012. The mediatization of the military. Media, War " Conflict. 5(3), pp.255-26.

This article looks into the manner in which the media changed the way of conducting battles. The military has had the influence of the media in its conduct, especially while dealing with matters involving the public participation in a revolution. The media publishes messages regarding wars, intending to reach diverse users such as the government, the public, as well as the military. With this information, it is upon the recipients of the messages to digest them and act responsibly towards realizing a common ground to resolve the existing conflict.

I will use this article to prove that the governments’ responses to the Arab Spring connoted a war with their citizens. The act by the military on behalf of the government indicated that the government was not ready to relent on its authoritarian control over the public and the media. However, media houses continued to cover the entire period of the revolution, hence encouraging the citizens to continue fighting for their rights. The media is of great help to the people, as it gives them an opportunity to address their problems to those in authority.

Miladi, N., 2016. Social media and social change. DOMES: Digest of Middle East Studies. 25(1), pp.36–51.

This article proves that media is a crucial element of social and political change. In most cases, any need for a change originates through the media. The use of the internet and other forms of online communication medium proves to be of great influence in the manner in which people address issues that affect them. It was through the media that the citizens of the Arab countries raised their concerns to the government and forced their leaders to listen to them.

I will use this article to prove that the media is a tool of political change. When people use the media to enlighten each other, they have a form of addressing their grievances comprehensively, and also give them the chance to overcome the pressure of the oppressive leadership. It is only through the media that people can reach their leaders, and through the same media, they design ways and means of achieving this objective such as the use of revolution.
