The technological era has enabled the establishment of many ways through which individuals communicate with each other. As a result, there has been an eruption of several ways through which people tend to present themselves in the social media platforms. People are generally cautious about how other humans perceive them. The paper discusses how Goffman's theory affects how people present themselves in social media.
Data Trails and Impression Management
I googled my name to find out the different social media platforms that would show my name. My name only pooped up in Facebook but there were other platforms that showed my name but the information was not mine. I was not surprised since I am a very private person therefore, I do not share my personal information aimlessly.
Potential Impact on Professional Opportunities
Everything one does online always leaves a trail which sticks there forever. That data can aid or hinder one from a job of their dreams and therefore significantly affects one's future. For instance, if a hiring company happens to find embarrassing photos of potential employees, they will not hire them. Therefore, people are likely to be cautious when commenting on social media or avoid controversial photos in social media to ensure they do not miss a chance of being hired. Indeed, Goffman's theory of dramaturgy applies to people's digital trails.
Impression Management on Facebook
My Facebook profile is quite private an only contains pictures of my travels and family. Goffman theory of presentation of self definitely applies in my social media life since I selectively choose what I post online. My postings on Facebook are more deliberate acts than my real-life behavior. My social media users including me choose what to display in their profiles which can be considered as impression management. Additionally, disclosing personal information selectively helps me present my ideal self. My personal and professional opportunities are not negatively affected by what I post in social media since I selectively choose what I post online.
