Mood Swings in Adolescents

Introduction

As a teenage girl, I was overwhelmed to join college so that I can proceed with my studies and achieve my dream career. Tara Parker-Pope and Lisa Belkin focus on children and adolescents, which are two groups of young people that require support from their parents for growth and development both personally and academically. From my experience, I agree with the authors that parents play a vital role in shaping the lives of their children, particularly during childhood and puberty.

The Impact of Expressive Writing on Mood Swings

One of the most significant problems that teenage girls encounter is mood swings. I remember how sometimes I feel happy and after some few minutes I am angry for no good reason. Biologically, I understand that my body is undergoing various changes during adolescence that promotes maturity. Parker-Pope is not wrong when she reveals that expressive writing, which involves writing personal experiences, helps an individual to improve mood disorders (Parker-Pope). I have learned that, whenever I write something positive about myself, I become more confident to overcome multiple challenges and happy. Besides, I tend to memorize an experience when I write it down.

Challenges of Parenting Teenagers

In Belkin’s article “The Blessings of a B-Minus,” Wendy Mogel, a psychologist, asserts that parents have reasons to worry when their children grow (Belkin). In reality, young people require more attention and are sometimes disturbing. Parents must keep guiding them on what to do or not. When it comes to adolescents, caregivers worry about whether their children might engage in bad habits during parties. Being a teenage girl, I can agree that one tends to resist or ignore the advice given by the elders. At some point, I feel that I should make decisions about my life without anyone’s getting involved. Hence, handling teenagers is not simple, especially for parents who do not understand what these young people are going through in life.

Conclusion

To sum up, parents have a duty to look after their children until they become adults. Nevertheless, teenage girls want to be left alone although they do not know what is right for them. All in all, I have learned that writing about oneself is a critical method to eradicate mood swing for teenagers.
