Managing Across Functions
One of the leadership abilities identified by Trivellas and Panagiotis is managing across functions (383). Managing across functions is a difficult leadership skill for me to grasp. It entails a variety of actions involving all divisions within a business. It becomes difficult to master it effectively when other departments are involved, as a leader is likely to grow confused and exhausted in the process.
Leadership: Born vs. Made
Leaders are both born and bred. Leaders who are born find it easier to lead others without the assistance of various training and coaching. For instance, Martin Luther King Jr. was a born leader based on how he showed leadership during the struggle for civil rights. On the other hand, some leaders are made through training and mentorship. They have to undergo various phases that are used to make them leaders.
Exceptional Leaders
There are various leaders whom I have worked with who are exceptional in nature. However, the most effective leader that I have worked with is a manager of a grocery store that I used to work at some years ago. The manager had various leadership competencies that were desirable to me as an aspiring leader. The leader was involved in training the young employees on leadership skills which are crucial. My leadership success is ongoing as I have received numerous pieces of training on leadership as well as being involved in various leadership activities such as mentoring young people. Mentoring young people has made me achieve more in leadership, like understanding how leadership works. I believe that with time I would be a competent leader.
