Roseville, California and its Geopolitical Significance
I live in Roseville, California, a suburb of Sacramento, California's state capital. We are fairly centrally positioned, east of San Francisco and bordered by the world's greatest rice growers, as well as northwest of one of the nation's largest fruit and vegetable growing areas. The community serves as a gateway for our water to reach Los Angeles. Our town is geopolitical because there is constantly a debate about how much water farmers should have access to and how much should be shipped to southern California (Kun, 2009). There was not enough water to go around during last year's drought. There is a debate about the State of Jefferson. This is a growing movement of people who want to establish a new state from southern Oregon to just north of Sacramento. They are mostly conservative farmers and landowners who want to move away from liberal politics.
Phenomenological Community and Shared Interests
My phenomenological community is my social group which I am involved with. It is a phenomenological community because this group shares common interests with my family and me (Kun, 2009). For instance, we share the same religious beliefs and same conventional political views. Moreover, we participate in fitness activities and fun outings during our free time. We also gather together and share meals, celebrations, and support.
Challenges for Community Health
I think the biggest challenge for community health would be cultural diversity. Other problems would include the health of the community. Are you in an area where fresh fruits and vegetables are available? What are the education and social climate? Therefore, public nurses need to work with the available resources. This is because different communities have a different amount of available resources. Community health nurses bring tolerance and new ideas to a diverse population (Kun, 2009). The nurses are in the communities and know what needs to be put in place to help communities achieve health. Nurses in similar communities may make assumptions based on what they think instead of considering facts. They may assume that since the community is the same ethnicity as theirs, for instance, they may have the same needs (Kun, 2009). Challenges for the same community may involve nurses because the nurse may know the individuals that they are trying to help because they do not want to be that vulnerable. Sometimes, it is easier to talk to an unfamiliar person rather than a family friend, to obtain personal information such as sex and drugs in fear of being "found out" The challenges need to be handled one on one. One will be able to address the arising issues if they take time to know the culture and wants of a community. Thus, one needs to establish a good relationship and a level of trust with those you are collaborating with.
Ethnic Sub-Communities and Considerations
There are few ethnic sub-communities in my community. Different considerations such as quality of healthcare, chronic health conditions, healthcare providers and social determinants of health should be considered.
