Drug use is commonplace in the US, especially among young people and those with poor incomes. According to the 1970 drug control act, certain tranquilizers, amphetamines, sedatives, hallucinogens, anabolic steroids, and other chemicals are prohibited from being manufactured, imported, owned, used, or distributed. Congress has passed a comprehensive drug abuse prevention and control program in response to the country's drug abuse problems. This program will aid to track drug use among the general public. (Scheb, 2013). The region's economy will increase if there is a drug-free environment.
When someone uses drugs, it has an impact on them, making them want to buy the drug frequently. It can further be linked to a culture that an individual will adopt. Nevertheless, an end to this culture will be based on the type of therapy or rehabilitation procedure that is being applied. According to a publication by Newton (2017), rehabilitation helps an individual reach a point where they hardly need to consume drugs to get involved in any productive activity. The various institutions in the region draft policies that will guide an individual on the mode of conduct in society. It further involves issuing punishments to the people that are found guilty of consuming, trafficking, and selling the drugs.
Changes to the Original Act
Different punishments are issued to the individual found guilty of using a particular drug. It is considered as a substantial move in the law making the jury have minimal time spent in identifying an appropriate punishment to the lawbreaker. Similarly, the community can also be aware of a sentence that they will receive when found guilty.
