Communication is essential since it requires the sharing of knowledge through common structures, behavioral signals, and symbols. Formal records may also be used in communication to convey a message to a specific audience (Burgoon, Guerrero and Floyd 3). Words spoken with the purpose of transmitting information to another are examples of verbal contact. Body language, movements, and actions that emphasize spoken words are examples of nonverbal communication. The primary goal is to provide context to any missed facts or misunderstandings. In any party, organization, or community, a lack of communication may lead to disagreements and a loss of cooperation, particularly if no one wants to listen to the other. Information should be passed in the proper way to ensure improvement of relationships between different parties.
Men and women have been created differently even in communication as research show that men talk more than women do. However, gender stereotype claims that women are the ones that talk more. Women are known to connect well through conversations and can express their emotions and feelings. On the other hand, men connect well through action, suggestions, sharing facts and ideas as well as avoid discussing anything that would raise their emotions. None verbal communication contributes to a large percentage which means that people need to pay more attention to others during conversations (Burgoon, Guerrero and Floyd 7). It is very likely to find them talking about personal issues including those touching on private affairs such as marriage. For women taking face-to-face, sitting or standing is quite preferred while in men shoulder-to-shoulder or group discussion is more preferable. While men are more relaxed while talking, women can talk in varied tones and volume to help in articulation of the ideas. Conversation styles also differ with men being more concise than women are since they like going to the point and moving to the next topic. However, women tend to tell details affecting a situation although it may depend on an individual’s personality. Some people can be talkative and outgoing more than others regardless of their gender.
Non-verbal communication involves body language, voice tone, and facial expressions, which may be interpreted differently by individuals. Verbal and nonverbal communication is important while dating as it gives clues about the feelings of the two individuals. Misinterpretation of nonverbal communication can lead to conflict in relationships and sometimes lead to breakout (Skovholt, Grønning and Kankaanranta 780). People need to interpret the nonverbal signs well to avoid disappointment. The two communication styles increases closeness between the parties. For instance, the nonverbal communication can create reassurance to the individuals especially through smile, a light touch on one’s arm, or a soft tone. It can improve a relationship between two parts since it complements the verbal message. Verbal and nonverbal enhance understanding of the message when the two are used together (Skovholt, Grønning and Kankaanranta 780). For instance, use of body language can help in understanding the other partner. For instance if one says yes and nods at the same time it denotes that the two are on the right track and agreeing on the issue being discussed. When dating, any misinterpretation of conversation can have negative consequences on the relationship or even breakup. Someone cannot tell his/her partner that they will go for a date while shaking or frowning since it would indicate negative feelings about the entire plan. One may not be able to fake nonverbal communication thus people in dating relationship must pay attention to the body language during a verbal communication. Some body language may contradict verbal communication and partners must be able to recognize when things are not right. For instance, if an individual stays at a distance, crosses his/her legs tight, leans away from the other, or avoids eye contact t means there are issues in the relationships. One is disagreeing with whatever the other is saying or doing. However, if a person portrays the opposite it is possible that the relationship is strained. Verbal communication can be used in social places to bring people together in arguments. It can be used for clarification of misunderstandings and providing missing information. The power of words such as “I am sorry” “please”, or “excuse me” can mend relationships and sustain relationships. In dating relationship, it is important for persuading and explaining to the other person about matters of relationship.
Social situations require use of both verbal and nonverbal communication in expressing views and solving issues among individuals. Social conversations may involve debates and creative thinking that means that verbal and nonverbal means of passing messages should be used. The latter entails affects peoples’ perceptions and exchanges since it involves body language such as facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, and posture. In a social gathering, the sound of conversation such as pitch, volume, and tone can be interpreted differently in social situations (Skovholt, Grønning and Kankaanranta 781). Sometimes they can reveal sarcasm and mockery, which can interfere with positive socialization. The clothing also determines the interpretation of communication in social places as others may pass different judgments. Verbal communication passes a message while nonverbal tries to reinforce it through interpretation. When people are talking gestures must match the words to indicate honesty and trustworthiness of the information one is passing to a group. Verbal and nonverbal communication helps people to understand one another and agree on several issues. They give people a chance to negotiate and argue on different issues making it possible for them to understand one another. In case of disagreements, verbal communication assists in creating a consensus among the members. People should learn to appreciate nonverbal mode of communication to reduce chances of misinterpretation. Some gestures such as eye contact are important in conveying messages and showing the speaker that the members are paying attention. In social gatherings, it is common for people to speak at the same time making it challenging to understand the message. However, listening and observing others as they talk can help in making the subject of discussion clearer.
Verbal and nonverbal communication is very important at the workplace depending on the occupation. The two help in improving workplace relationships as they allow others to receive the messages the way they are intended (Leathers and Michael 9). Positive non-verbal communication can help in building of positive business relationships while negative ones lead to conflicts. The two also ensure effective performance in business organizations due to frequent communication with employees and other stakeholders. Discussions on job-related matters are also very crucial since it helps in informing everybody about work schedules, performance, and deadlines. This enables them to make adjustments where necessary. Most managers communicate nonverbally which may have positive or negative attitudes towards employees. A negative expression by a manager can affect employee performance by raising or lowering their morale. Verbal and nonverbal communication also helps in enhancing workplace relationships especially if they are positive (Leathers and Michael 9). Verbal communication helps in persuading others to join in certain project and correcting any wrong information. If one makes an error when passing messages saying a sorry verbally can help in saving a situation. One can also clarify issues, which are not clearly understood by others by explaining further. This will help in avoiding making of false judgments about certain situations. Other benefits include increased satisfaction, positive impact on absenteeism, removing barriers, as well as motivating employees. When using nonverbal communication, a team leader may tell when the members are paying attention or not. For instance when some members start looking through the window the speaker knows that they are bored or have no concentration and may change the tactics. Signs of attachments may also be identified and remedies taken. For instance talking to someone sitting at the tip of a chair can reveal that the individuals mind is far away and wishes that the meeting would end the soonest possible.
Communication is very important in various situations and individuals should be keen when using verbal and nonverbal means. The two complement each other and help in bringing out the message being communicated clearly. Facial expressions can tell a lot about the attitude people in conversation have. In addition, men, and women use communication differently but the most important thing is passing the correct message which should be received without distortion.
