Challenges in Employee Motivation

Employee Motivation

Employee motivation is crucial if an organization is to reach its goals and objectives. Managers have a duty to keep their employees motivated, finding new strategies to boost their employees' spirits and coming up with solutions to address upcoming challenges involving employee motivation (Kuppuswamy et al. p.7). There have been tremendous changes within the organizational workforce in the last 50 years that has brought in new challenges in employee motivation that a present-day manager will have to face and address.

Diversity

Diversity is the first challenge that seems to stand out conspicuously among others since the current-day workforce shows increased diversity; there are more women, minorities, vulnerable people such as the disabled, youths, and people with different sexual orientations. These people have different intrinsic needs, perspectives, interests, and ideas, whereby they want to feel valued and have good relationships with fellow employees while at the same time being given equal opportunities to grow and nurture themselves (Porter, Riesemny and Dail p.71).

Employee Customer Relations

Employee customer relations is a challenge in the modern workplace. The last fifty years have brought about increased business competition, which has meant that businesses have had to increase their customer-employee interaction to increase customer satisfaction and beat competition, especially in businesses such as hospitality and banking (Kuppuswamy et al. p.12). Moreover, there have been more platforms for customer-employee interactions such as Twitter and Facebook. These interactions mean that employees have to deal with more difficult customers who can make work unbearable for the employees and equitably demotivate them.

Employee to Employee Relations

Employee to employee relations in the workplace has proved to be a challenge that has come up within the last 50 years. There has been increased multiculturalism in the workplace as compared to the previous years where the working majority were white people. This has meant that people with different ideas, cultures, and perspectives will have to work together, and ideological clashes are bound to happen. These clashes may increase workplace tensions and stress resulting in the demotivation of employees. Proper and healthy professional relationships in the workplace are essential if an organization is to increase its productivity. A manager has to address these challenges by proper training and formulating positive policies to increase employee morale.
