The main character and the only one mentioned in the short story “Bullet in the Brain” is Anders. Tobias Wolff presents him as a pompous and unsympathetic character. He is a narcists that think of himself highly compared to other individuals in the society. As a matter of fact, no one cares about him because of his critical nature, for instance, as seen with his interactions with the women at the bank. Also, he had a nonchalant attitude towards bank robbers. His interactions make one wonder whether Anders really cares about his own life.

Anders is known for his weary elegant savagery that he used to dispatch everything he reviewed. Anders is a critique not only of literature but also in the realm of life as he criticises everything that his sense brings to attention. Anders denounced everyone and thus deliberately and continuously cut himself off from the rest of the world. By this, he allowed himself the comfort of lambasting it, thus, he was trapped in the endless loop of isolation and reprobation. The story shows that Anders does not care and the only thing safe from criticism is his own life.

An interview done by Bat Segundo reveals that Tobia Wolff used wrting as a form of therapy. Tobias says that writing gives the reader a sense that the author is telling a story not from an immediate moment but from a distance. As such, the story “bullet in the Brain” gives readers a wider vision of the circumstances that the author and the people around him were involved. Tobias Wolff further says that stories that do have a narcissistically defined sense are deficient. Anders of “Bullet in the Brain” shows an overly narcissist individual that care for himself more than anyone else.
