Presidential elections are usually held in two stages, with each stage decided by whether or not the previous stage was successful. The first stage consists of an indirect election in which people vote for their favorite candidate. The nominee is declared the winner if they obtain an absolute majority of the electoral votes cast, which is 270 out of 538. If the candidates do not get an absolute majority of votes, the house delegates will select the president. Any of which is included in the twelfth amendment bill. Consequently, as much as a certain candidate is famous and his or her personality is well recognized in a certain state, each presidential candidate is responsible to at least try as much as possible to emphasize their policies on at least more than half of the country’s states to be able to get the lead. This is because the president will have senators and the representatives to back him or her during the working term.

The presidential candidate should present all the issues that they want to address clearly on their campaign to be able to get all the voters support since lead to an increase on the absolute majority votes hence they will not lean on the biasness of the house representatives.

Presidential elections

During campaign periods the manifestos of each presidential candidate matters a lot and how they finally address to the public. The competition between these candidates is somehow entertaining when they are throwing mud at one another but actually what really matters is what each candidate emphasizes his or her points on how to tackle certain issues that affect the country. Although the candidates get attacks because of how they address the issues or because of their personality, they should try as much as possible to implement them as soon as they are in the office. This means that these candidates should be explicit about how they address issues that the nation faces.

Some of the issues that affect the presidential elections are;

Economic growth

The rate at which the economy grows is at a very slow rate according to the congressional budget office which shows a reduction in the growth from 3.3percent per year from 1954 to 2014 to 2.1 percent per year from 2015 to 2025 (Green, D. P., & Gerber, A. S., 2015). The biggest reason for the reduced rate of growth is primarily due to the increased working hours which were caused by early retirement of the baby boomers and a low rate of birth in the after generations.

So as to be able to tackle the problem the working hours will have to be increased, the labor force quality should be improved greatly. Consequently, there should be an increased quality and quantity of the investment, there should be a reduced impact on the negative regulations. Increasing the research development on both public and private spending will greatly improve the growth rate.

Taxes

The first presidential problem encountered is that the emulated tax system is not able to collect enough revenue to be able to cater for the projects that are already emulated and set in place which include the Medicare, Social security, Infrastructures etc. By 2040 the revenue will be equivalent to the 19% of the GDP and about 25 percent will be spent (Somin, I, 2016).

According to William Gale and Aaron Krupkin (Romney, M., & Amazon.com (Firm), 2010) ways to compensate these tax issues they focused on five issues which are raising the revenue to cater for the long term , having an increase on the environmental taxes, cooperate taxes should be reformed, having a way to treat the middle and low income earners efficient and equal and finally they should ensure the high income households taxation is appropriate.

The National Debt

The national debt grew from 35 to 74 percent per GDP since 2007 and is estimated to be at 100 percent per GDP on reaching the year 2039(Romney, M., & Amazon.com (Firm), 2010). The major contributor of the high debts is the high interest rate on the borrowed money to finance. The country will be paying a debt of $300 billion by 2017 and an estimated $800 billion by 2025 which will a major problem since it will require the revenue collected by the federal to make interest payments for the nation(Green, D. P., & Gerber, A. S. 2015).

The major debt issues the presidential candidates must be able to address are about the Social Security which has been paying out a lot of benefits exceeding the taxes that it collects since the year 2010(Green, D. P., & Gerber, A. S. 2015). The second is about Medicare and other health issues whereby a way must be emulated on how to reduce the healthcare spending which will in turn cause the reduction of the federal debt. The third one is finding a way to increase the taxes that have been set to be able to cater for the economy’s growth and reduction in the debt.

Health

The issues that the presidential candidate is about to focus on are the issues on affordable health care act, the health care spending should so much controlled and even reduced as much as possible and finding a way to reform the Medicare so that it can protect its future by using its trust funds (Green, D. P., & Gerber, A. S. 2015).

The other part to address on health are the issues such as unhealthy food that are being consumed, issues on drug abuse, reducing the difference of health care between the poor and the affluent people, researching and upholding biomedical technology and innovation.

Defense

The presidential candidate is able to address how he or she will focus on issues such as a limitation on the nuclear weapons of the country, being able to protect the maritime space and the international air, being able to concur the groups that might rise in power and be a threat to the international system that is stable and finally they should address crisis on serious conflicts (Romney, M., & Amazon.com (Firm), 2010).

The goals and strategic planning of the defense according to O’Hanlon are shutting down the Iran powers on the country, having a way to sustain NATO, diminishing or deleting all the groups that have risen such as the ISIS, having maintenance on the nuclear deterrent and retaining and increasing the world’s best defense and scientific industrial base(Kimberling, W. C., & National Clearinghouse on Election Administration (U.S.), 1992).

Conclusion

The voters deserve thoughtful answers on some of the major issues that are affecting the presidential elections. Therefore, the presidential candidates should be able to come up with enough strategies that will convince the voters that their manifestos or argumentation make sense and they should be elected to enforce them.
