Dan is the protagonist. Dan who works as an obituary writer aspires to write novels.

From the play, Dan introduced as the first character where he rescues Alice in Black-friars bridge accident and takes her to the hospital. A year later he writes a novel about Alice’ life. He forms the introduction and the plot because he meets Alice while he is still in another relationship with another woman named Ruth. Dan depicts a restless hardened man who doesn’t believe in soft words and is fond of moral and sexual deception. He tends to think more with his mouth open than brain for example when he got back with Alice in spite of faithfulness forces her to confess which later leads to break off the relationship. Through Dan, the author advances the main plot of the play depicting the failure of men to achieve spiritual and sexual intimacy. When he met Anna, he thought true love was a reality, only to let that go because he is impulse driven.

Larry is seen as the antagonist because he gives Dan strong competition when it comes to Anna and Alice relationship and intentionally does things to ensure that Dan is not at peace with his relationship with Anna. Larry has emotional intimacy issues just like Dan.  Ironically, Larry as a doctor is expected to help heal patients however outside his profession; he destroys anyone who harms or displeases him. Anna and Alice perceived as losers in this maze of a romantic relationship. They end up used, misused, isolated and lonely. Alice dies alone in the city with no one to identify her body. Anna depicts how women end up in tragic lustful relationships. Men are left to explore and continue with life as if nothing happened.

The author shows that in search for pure love one will experience the pain of love severally in your life.

• What is the climax?
