The Concept of Verbal and Non-verbal Communication in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Interaction behavior can be expressed by an individual’s mindset to act in a certain way that impacts personal variances. It is brought about by how one expresses feelings, thoughts and needs as a substitute for an open or direct communication. Verbal or non-verbal interaction is significantly affected by a person's behavioral style which utilizes a single technique requiring a high level of self-awareness to identify with a personal behavioral style (Wildfeuer 31). Suzanne Collins, the author of the “Hunger Games - Catching Fire” clearly shows the protagonists who won the games, go above and beyond to show leadership despite opposition from the capital. In the film, the characters use verbal and non-verbal styles of communication to appeal to the audiences sometimes invoking deep emotions through models like Ethos, Pathos, and Logos (Worthington and Bodie 26). The analysis mainly focuses on chapter twenty-one which describes the concepts stimulating both verbal and non-verbal style of communication.


First, the movie begins after Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark get back to their district 12 as victors. As a show of their triumph, they both live in a luxurious house where Katniss lives with her sister and mother, and Peeta lives alone. Onset the day for their victory tour; president snow visits Katniss where he explains that the love approach they used to end the competition in the previous hunger games, would be interpreted by people and may cause an uprising in the districts. As a way to contain it, he orders Katniss to convince him and the people through the victors’ tour broadcasting; failure to meet his orders meant he would kill her loved ones and district 12 will be destroyed like district 13 during the uprising years back (Shmoop-Editorial).


They tour around districts trying to convince the people that Panem is noble but an uprising spirit could be felt. A mocking jay song with a three-finger salute was used as symbols of the rebellion. They speak through the help of Effie who shows them the ethical way to talk during the delivery of speeches (Worthington and Bodie 41). President snow is angered by the attention they are both getting from the people and decides to change the rules of the next games sending all the victors of the previous years to the arena. The two have allies in the games, such as Johanna who cleverly cuts Katniss tracker out to protect her from the capital tracing her and uses the flashes of lighting to electrocute the dome. As a result, the system running the arena goes down. The film ends as Katniss and Beetee are headed to district 13 as the story continues. i


Suzanne has used the concepts of communication in chapter twenty-one depicted by ethos, pathos, and logos (Shmoop-Editorial). The verbal and non-verbal styles derived from the section enables the audience to understand the flow of events through the main characters clearly. Ethos is identified as an appropriate language must be chosen for its audience and a favorable topic using the correct grammar and syntax. For instance, the audience focuses on like Katniss and can identify human ethics as she shows how emotionally disturbed she is to have to kill other competitors (Wildfeuer 53). Through the use of these characters, the film shows ethical concern about the killing of a fellow human being.


The concept of Pathos can be referred to as the emotional appeals and is entirely used by the author to successfully connect her audience through a showcase of sympathy in the arena (Worthington and Bodie 47). It is unheard of where tribute from another district sacrifices him or herself for the sake of another region. Case in point, in the arena, Peeta is poisoned by the fog and Katniss finds it difficult to carry him. Suzanne surprises her audience with the turn of events whereby, Mags, sacrifices herself by walking towards the poisonous fog that kills her. Mags character charms the audience as the author uses her in non-verbal communication to invoke deep sad and sorrowful emotions.  Her escapade brought the audience to fall the lovable character at the same time sympathize with her. The audience clearly understands the movie from the well-developed language, use of emotional tone and examples of well-played display of emotional events (Wildfeuer 62).


The use of logic in the film has been employed to persuade of the audience of the actions performed. The characters in hunger games are seen to carefully use logic or otherwise reason when faced with the challenging situation. For instance, after being in contact with the poisonous fog, Katniss alerts the other tributes of the impending danger and thus run for safety. It is logical to run for safety when faced with toxic mist (Worthington and Bodie 32). The thought of running is instant to think of as it is also the best way the audience could use when challenged with the toxic fog. Also, after the fog cleared, the tributes discovered that water was neutralizing the effects of the poison.


In conclusion, communication behavior in the hunger games shows both verbal and non-verbal communication through the concept of ethos, pathos, and logos makes a person to be appreciated in what they do just as Katniss is aware of the ethics, emotional and logical approach in her communicative behavior. It is therefore essential for people to apply positive ethics and showcase emotional feelings accordingly as well as how they reason should impact others positively.
