The Co-Production of International Films and Television Shows on Large Scale

The co-production of international films and television shows on large scale continues to increase since the early 1990s. Most of these co-productions reveal a contentious integration of economic and cultural activities that do affect our society on a global scale. Co-productions are mainly meant to promote collaboration among countries characterised by small production capacity. These collaborations enable such countries to pool resources that aid them to compete internationally in film and TV shows production. The produced TV shows and films contain cultural and educational materials, which have been identified to be very significant in guiding the behaviours of the society. Most of these productions do target international audiences rather than the local citizens as their consumers. This paper seeks to discuss the Crown TV show that is usually shown on Netflix, a television platform that usually provides streaming services to its customers to enable them to watch some of the important international TV shows and films.

The crown is a drama that was created by Peter Morgan and later produced by Sony pictures and Left Bank pictures TV for Netflix (Gibney, 54). The production of this series was reported to have consumed about £ 100 million and more in terms of people and extras that were still required for the completion of the first season. Morgan was able to produce the series in collaboration with other seven researchers who assisted him with the production of articles, books and photographs, which facilitated the production of this series. This series was first shot in various parts of UK, which included Ely, London, and Aberdeenshire among many other locations. The series was later shot in Cape Town in South Africa. The series was set to take six seasons with a minimum of about 10 episodes in every season.

Its first season was released in November 2016 while the second was released in December 2017 (Dew, 157). The third season is yet to come out although the dates have not been specified. This series has been praised by most people and it has received many views from different people in the world. The series was majorly praised by for its writing, direction, production values and its clear account of the history of Queen Elizabeth’s reign more specifically in the first season where Foy and John Lithgow who acted as Queen Elizabeth II and her husband respectively were able to win awards as the best actress and Actor accordingly (Gibney, 54).

This show mainly describes a biographical story of the Queen Elizabeth’s reign in the United Kingdom. The first season mainly discusses the marriage of Queen Elizabeth II to her husband while the second season covers the story about Suez crisis and the birth of Prince Edward, Queen’s first child. The third season is expected to cover the story of Harold Macmillan who was able to act as the nation’s prime minister for two terms (Gibney, 54. This series is expected to continue up to season six after covering about sixty episodes. It covers the entire story of Queen Elizabeth from her young towards the end of her reign as the queen of the United Kingdom.

One of the major challenges that were able to be encountered in this series is about the payment of the acting salaries to the main characters. We find out that Claire Foy was able to complain that despite the fact that she acted as the major actor, she was paid less compared to her counterpart John Lithgow who did not play a major part of the series as she did. Thus bringing about the issue of gender inequality (Dew, 157). This series greatly promotes the values of women as it enables them to prove that they can actually rule a nation in a proper way. This series is very genuine as it majorly talks about what took place in the entire life of Queen Elizabeth II. My desire to watch this show was majorly meant to enable me to discover if the information contained in this series was true about Queen Elizabeth’s real life or not. After watching it, I was then much convinced that the series is genuine. The major lesson learnt from series is that women are capable of ruling just like men and they should be given a chance to do so.
