The City and the People

Both poems express the great theme of passion.

This is apparent as the poet speaks of the whole city of Chicago, which is respectful of all individuals without bigotry, resulting in people's solidarity. He refutes any of the charges leveled against the city. As a result, it is poignant that the author discusses current issues in the community, such as love and solidarity among the residents. The author clearly employs modernism through imagery. For eg, when he addresses the city as "you," he uses personification and synecdoche to explain it. One way through which the speaker depicts modernism is by using an apostrophe. This is vivid when he addresses the inanimate thing 'Chicago'. For instance, he addresses the city as 'you'.

In the poem Mob, the rhyme flow is evident in a modern style used by the author when he addresses the people of the city in his Poem.

The city Chicago seems to be way more than a man. This is called personification. The poetic style is used by the speaker in the poem as having shoulders, has the heart and even laughs. Personification is also evident in the poem Mob when the author is having a direct conversation with Chicago and discussing the bad image that some people think the city has.

In the poem Chicago, the poet is seen using a part of something to describe a whole.

For instance, he describes the Chicago as a city of big shoulders. This is called synecdoche. In this case, he uses a small part of a human being to describe an entire city. In the poem Mob, the poet doesn't use part of the thing to stand for the whole of it. For instance, he says that it is not the leader who wins the whole battle but it is the common people who win and do the work.

Love is paramount among the citizens.

It is through unity that the country is developed. The author is a patriotic, he loves his country and his city that is why he can defend the accusations nailed against the city.
