The Circle and The Transparent Shark
The Circle and The Transparent Shark are books written by Dave Eggers and in them, lots of metaphors are applied. The Transparent Shark is an implication of how technology is virtual and consumes us in a way that is more astitute than we suppose. An instance is where the shark consumes the lobster, implying that we take up technology but in the end the technology integrates into our system, becomes a part of us and eventually we discard it once new technology comes up.
LITERATURE REPORT
The YouthRank system is not entirely exceptional but has a few features that if embraced can be used when dealing with children. Knowing the rank of each child poses pros and cons. For instance, underscoring children will be subjected to bias, while a merit will be to help them improve performance. A second comparison would be the demoralization of underscoring children, whilst well performing ones will have a boost in morale. In its entirety, the YouthRank will pose both good and bad consequences if ranks are exposed.
PastPerfect
PastPerfect is a system I would want to know more about, out of curiosity. The pros for knowing such a system are that it evokes creativity by creating the need to innovate based on the system itself and that the solutions it would create enable society to experience efficient utility of services. The cons revolve around the fact that technology can be detrimental to society by rendering other related technology irrelevant. Thus, the persons associated with existing technology would suffer loss of sources of livelihood.
New technology and SeeChange
New technology such as SeeChange, which involves camera applications, almost always poses challenges in implementation. Complains from clients over such mishaps can be overwhelming to providers. The same challenge Mae’s parents undergo is felt across board in the mobile phone technology where they come as faulty and at times cannot be repaired.
Technology and its Effects on Society
Mecer writes to Mae in a farewell write-up, “this tool which is far more insidious than any human invention that’s come before it, must be checked. Regulated. Turned back and that, most of all, we need options for opting out. We are living in a tyrannical state now…” (Eggers, 2013). I support the aforementioned statement with the notion that technology, if not monitored can be misleading and with negative effects to society in such a way that it eternally disrupts the proper and necessary aspects of life. Society is headed down the detrimental way of life due to technology simply because of the dependence that we human have accorded it.
