Raju and Rancho: A True Friendship

The film, three Idiots, is an Indian comedy featuring three students of the Imperial College of Engineering, Farhan, Raju, and Rancho. The most important relationship in the movie is that between Raju and Rancho who are made friends by the fact that they are roommates in college. The two are friends whose relationship undergoes several transformations in the movie from when they are in school to ten years after clearing.

Question 2

The interpersonal needs theory posits that the need for inclusion, control, and affection motivate individuals to get into groups and form interpersonal relationships (Kuczynski and Melanie, 36). In the film, the two protagonists, Raju and Rancho, present a perfect case for the theory. Raju and Rancho have the need to feel part of a community in the ICE where they do not fit due to their different opinions on education. Rancho has the need to control Raju while his friend mainly has the opposite characteristic. Raju follows the control of Rancho to the point where the director, Dr. Virus separates them for his own gain. Finally, Raju has the impulse to be protected and experience affection from his friends which makes him follow them. Rancho’s impulse is mainly based on the fact that he does not fit within the school where most of the people are against his methods and principles on education.

Question 3

In the film, we see the internal dialectical tension between Raju and Rancho when the two fight over differences given education (Grusec, Joan, and Hastings, 57). While Rancho feels that education should not focus on grades and pressure but what individuals can apply in the real world, Raju wants to pass his exams and help his family. External dialectical tension occurs when Dr. Viru incites Raju against being friends with Rancho citing family income differences. While he successfully separates the two at first, the separation does not last.

List 2

Question 1

Emotions are used to express gratitude and regret by the two protagonists in the film. After learning about how Rancho used a scooter to save his father’s life, Raju gets emotional as he apologizes. We see an emotional communication where Raju is communicating emotionally as he is grateful and sorry for making a grudge against him.

Question 2

Proxemics refers to the spatial arrangement where people create an invisible personal space marking their territory (Kuczynski and Melanie, 26). Personal space between the two can be seen where Raju shakes off when Rancho tries to place a hand on him while trying to convince him to calm down. Kinetics refers to movements used by individuals during communications to make meaning of their words. While speaking to Raju about how Virus is trying to separate them, Rancho makes facial expressions to emphasize his words. Chronemics is the use of time to create meaning for words. Rancho uses the time to show Raju the importance of understanding concepts rather than cramming in school when he becomes a world-class engineer. Finally, there are adaptors or functional movements which can be seen in Raju as he scratches his head while creating a plan on how they can help Raju overcome the challenges of Virus.

Question 7

The close relationship involves an intimate and personal relationship between two individuals that makes the connection in more than just the normal way (Kuczynski and Melanie, 74). The two friends express the feeling of closeness and love for one another to the extent of taking care of their families. Rancho is deeply concerned about Raju and his family that he risks his life on a scooter with his father.
